Like other multiple-choice questions, there will be four answer choices, but three of them will be correct according to the passage, and one will be incorrect. Your task is to find the choice that does not match the information stated in the passage. Although this question type may seem simple, it can be tricky because all the options appear to be factual at first glance.
Lesson Introduction
الجزء 1
Negative Factual Information questions ask you to identify the option that is NOT true or is EXCEPTed by the passage. These questions test your careful reading skills — not what you know, but whether you can tell what the passage actually says and what it does not say. To answer correctly, you must check every option and confirm which one is missing or contradicted.
Strategy:
- Notice the negative word in the question. Words like “NOT,” “EXCEPT,” or “FALSE” change the goal — you are looking for the one statement that is incorrect or not mentioned in the passage. Read the question slowly to avoid misunderstanding it.
- Check each option one by one. For Negative Factual questions, you must test every choice. Go back to the passage and find where each statement is mentioned or supported.
- Mark the choices that match the passage. If the text clearly supports an option, it is true — eliminate it. Only one choice will be not supported or contradicted.
- Be careful with information that sounds possible. A common trap is an answer that sounds logical but is never stated in the passage. If you cannot find the sentence that confirms it, it is probably the wrong one.
- Eliminate wrong answers.
- ❌ Eliminate answer choices that are factually true.
Daily Life example (Advertisement):

Members can also join one complimentary fitness class every week, including spin, pilates, and Zumba. Locker rentals are available for a small additional fee. Our facility opens daily at 6:00 a.m. and closes at 11:00 p.m., giving you the flexibility to work out whenever it fits your schedule.
According to the advertisement, which of the following is NOT true?
- Members can access the gym, yoga studio, and indoor pool.
- Locker rentals cost an extra fee.
- Members receive one free fitness class per week.
- Membership includes unlimited personal training sessions.
Detailed Explanation:
The passage clearly says members get access to the gym, yoga studio, and pool, and also one free class per week. It also says locker rentals have a small additional fee. But there is no mention of personal training sessions — the text never states that they are included, let alone unlimited. Therefore, this statement is not true according to the passage.
- (A) is true — it matches the first line of the ad.
- (B) is true — locker rentals cost extra.
- (C) is true — members get one free fitness class each week.
The correct answer is (D) because it adds information that does not appear in the advertisement — unlimited personal training sessions.
Academic Passage example:
During the early twentieth century, city planners began promoting public parks as essential components of urban health and recreation. Studies at the time linked green spaces to cleaner air, reduced disease transmission, and lower stress among residents. As a result, many large cities across Europe and North America established municipal park systems supported by local governments.
However, access to these parks was not equal for all citizens. Working-class neighborhoods often received smaller or poorly maintained green areas compared to wealthier districts. Some cities restricted park entry through formal dress codes or entry fees, reinforcing social divisions rather than bridging them. Despite such limitations, these public spaces marked a major shift toward recognizing environmental design as part of social welfare.
Modern urban research continues to highlight the importance of accessible green areas. Data show that neighborhoods with more trees and vegetation experience cooler temperatures and lower pollution levels. This growing awareness has prompted city leaders to expand funding for tree planting, bike paths, and pedestrian zones to promote both environmental and community health.
Which statement is NOT supported by the passage?
- Public parks were originally promoted to improve urban health.
- Some early parks reinforced class divisions through access restrictions.
- Modern research connects urban greenery with environmental benefits.
- All neighborhoods in early cities had equal access to parks.
Detailed Explanation:
The passage explains that early public parks were created for health and recreation and that some cities limited access based on class or fees. It also says modern research shows the environmental benefits of green spaces. But it specifically mentions that access was not equal in early cities. Therefore, the statement “All neighborhoods in early cities had equal access to parks” is not true and is directly contradicted by the passage.
- (A) is correct — paragraph one supports this idea.
- (B) is correct — paragraph two clearly says this.
- (C) is correct — paragraph three confirms it.
The correct answer is (D) because it is the only choice that contradicts what the passage says — early parks did not provide equal access for all neighborhoods.
Tips to Remember:
- Always focus on the word NOT or EXCEPT — the task is the opposite of usual factual questions.
- Read every choice and find evidence for each one in the passage.
- Three choices are true; one is false or not mentioned.
- If you cannot find a sentence that supports a choice, it is likely the correct (negative) answer.
- Move slowly and double-check — one small detail can change truth to falsehood.
This is the final section of the lesson. I'm ready to start the review exercises!
Review Exercise (1/4)
[2] However, it was not only Jefferson’s purchase and his encouragement which fuelled westward migration. After the War of 1812, there was a great rise in prices of agricultural commodities. This motivated many non-farmers to take up agriculture, and pulled settlers westward into the new territories to find more arable land. This movement was facilitated by advances in transportation and roads. As America’s agricultural front expanded, the entire population of the American west expanded as well.
[3] Thousands of settlers moved to the west, increasing the population west of the Appalachian Mountains by more than four-hundred percent. Besides farmers, the migrants included tradesmen, and artisans, all with the same goal: to have a more successful life. Many of the migrants were newly arrived Europeans, whose families had lived in the same areas for centuries. Through changes in politics, religion, and economics, these immigrants chose to leave their roots for new American soil. Unlike Europe, where social status was inherited, America provided greater opportunity to change one’s social standing through hard word, luck, and intelligence.
All of the following are mentioned as contributing to increased westward migration in the United States, EXCEPT

clear ليست كذلك تماماً. ((D)) هي الإجابة الصحيحة.
(A) 'Increase in prices of agricultural products' is incorrect because paragraph 2 states that rising agricultural prices after the War of 1812 encouraged people to take up farming and move west.
(B) 'Better transport and roads' is incorrect because paragraph 2 explicitly says that advances in transportation and roads facilitated westward movement.
(C) 'Opportunity to improve one’s social standing' is incorrect because paragraph 3 explains that America offered greater opportunities to change social status compared to Europe.

[2] The work that formed the basis of Einstein’s general theory of relativity was bolstered by the work of Russian scientist Alexander Friedmann. In 1922, this physicist provided solutions to the field equations that laid the foundation for subsequent work on the Big Bang theory. Further supporting evidence for Einstein’s work came in 1929, when Edwin Hubble discovered that the light of distant galaxies was shifted toward the red end of the light spectrum. This phenomenon, known as “redshift,” demonstrates that galaxies are, in fact, moving away from each other. Moreover, his discovery that more distant galaxies are moving at a faster rate demonstrates that the expansion of the universe is occurring in a uniform fashion. Hubble’s discoveries proved to be one of the most important keys in unlocking the mechanism of the Big Bang. But what exactly is this phenomenon known as redshift?
[3] Redshift can be understood through a more familiar analogous phenomenon. We have all had the experience of standing in the street and hearing the siren of an ambulance or police car approaching us. What happens when the moving vehicle passes us? The sound of that siren changes noticeably. We call this the “Doppler effect,” and it occurs because of the difference between sound waves of an object moving toward us and those of an object moving away from us. This explains the sudden change in the sound of the siren.
[4] With redshift, the same thing is true of light waves. When an object such as a star is in motion, the light that it radiates changes. More specifically, it moves toward the red end of the light spectrum. Just as sound waves are longer when we hear a vehicle moving away from us, red light waves are longer for an object moving away from us. Furthermore, the extent to which a star’s light shifts can provide information about how fast the object is moving. Thus, by measuring the redshift of distant galaxies, scientists are able to determine their velocity. This, in turn, provides important information about how the universe is changing. By understanding the velocity of moving galaxies, scientists can begin to piece together what the universe looked like in the past. And they can also make predictions about what the universe will look like in the future.
[5] If this all sounds too easy, it is. Just as with most other theoretical models and subjects of scientific study, there are confounding factors. One of these is that the light that reaches human observers from distant galaxies may appear red for reasons other than redshift. When light moves through dust clouds, the dust particles may scatter the incoming light. In some cases, the dust can scatter the blue wavelengths of light while allowing more red light through. The result, from a human perspective, is red light from a distant galaxy that is not caused by redshift. That is, the red that reaches our eye tells us nothing about that galaxy’s velocity. Besides this physical interference of dust, there is also the fact that scientists’ ideas of the past and future are still in the realm of theory. There is simply no way of confirming that our reconstructions of the universe in the past are accurate.
According to the passage, all of the following are true EXCEPT

[2] For decades, the plume hypothesis was accepted with little reservation. However, improvements in seismic tomography have recently revealed that some supposed plume roots are shallower than originally assumed, lying only 200–300 kilometers beneath the crust instead of originating near the core-mantle boundary. In addition, geochemical analyses of hotspot lavas sometimes resemble mid-ocean-ridge basalts rather than the chemically distinct melts expected from deep mantle sources. These findings suggest that certain hotspots may instead form when lithospheric plates stretch and thin, allowing ordinary upper-mantle rock to melt more easily. Proponents of this “plate-driven” model point to the Iceland hotspot, where divergence along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge reduces pressure on the underlying mantle and promotes extensive volcanism without invoking a deep plume.
Despite the debate, many geologists suspect that both mechanisms operate, with deep plumes explaining long, linear island chains and plate-driven melting accounting for broader volcanic provinces. Resolving the controversy matters because hotspot tracks are used to reconstruct past plate motions and to infer the thermal structure of the planet’s interior. New experiments that simulate mantle convection under realistic temperature and pressure conditions, combined with satellite measurements of surface deformation, may soon clarify whether the mantle behaves as a sluggish conveyor belt carrying discrete plumes or as a dynamic layer whose melting patterns primarily reflect stresses in the overlying plates.
Which of the following is NOT mentioned as evidence challenging the deep plume hypothesis in paragraph 2?

done صحيح! الإجابة الصحيحة هي "((C))".
clear ليست كذلك تماماً. ((C)) هي الإجابة الصحيحة.
(A) 'Seismic tomography reveals shallow plume roots' is incorrect because paragraph 2 explicitly mentions this as evidence against deep plume origins.
(B) 'Geochemical similarities between hotspot lavas and mid-ocean ridge basalts' is incorrect because paragraph 2 uses this similarity to challenge the deep plume hypothesis.
(D) 'Hotspot locations at points of lithospheric stretching' is incorrect because Iceland is cited as an example where plate-driven stretching explains volcanism.
