In this lesson, you will get a brief overview of Writing Task 2.
Writing Task 2 requires test takers to write an essay of at least 250 words , using a more traditional essay-writing style. Since this task involves more words and a longer process, it is best to allot 40 minutes for this section. (This is why allocating only 20 minutes for Writing Task 1 is important.)
First, let’s look at the types of essays included in this portion of the writing exam. It will benefit you to be familiar with the following six essay styles to be fully prepared for the test:

Each essay type requires a unique outline and strategy to maximize your score. It’s best to be familiar with every essay type and the specific approaches explained in the accompanying lessons.
While each question type requires a different structure and approach, it’s best to keep these general “Do’s” and “Don’ts” in mind when answering Writing Task 2:
What To Do:
1. DO read the question carefully and decide how you want to answer it. Identify key words and ensure you understand which essay type you must write (for example, an Opinion Essay or a Two-Part Essay).
2. DO take the time to plan your outline and notes. Many students start writing immediately, which can make it hard to stay organized. Taking at least one minute to plan your essay will greatly improve your score. Most essays should include four paragraphs: Introduction, Body 1, Body 2, and Conclusion.
3. DO start writing as soon as your outline is clear. Remember, you’ll have 40 minutes for this section if you spend no more than 20 minutes on Writing Task 1.
In general:
DO use proper and formal language.
DO make one straight line through a mistake, then write the correction beside it (e.g., bacround background).
What Not To Do:
DON’T start writing immediately without outlining your essay.
DON’T write too much or too little. Stay around 250 words.
DON’T spend too many sentences on your introduction or conclusion—focus on your argument.
DON’T use informal language or make careless errors.
