Larger airports generally have multiple terminals to sufficiently accommodate a given day's aircraft and their passengers. For example, Frankfurt Airport has two, with a third scheduled to open in 2026, and New York JFK boasts as many as six. On the other hand, smaller airports can have just one terminal building.

Concourse 指的是建築物內部或前面的廣闊開放區域，許多類型的建築物都有中央大廳，包括火車站、機場、飯店和購物中心。而一般來說當我們講到機場建築，就一定會提到 terminal 和 concourse，terminal 的中文是「航廈」，是機場裡、集結多功能於一身的大型建築物，而 concourse 則是這個大建築物的長分支 (the long branches off the building)，也會是登機口 (boarding gates) 所在的地方。
