Remember this golden writing rule!
While each question type requires a different structure and approach, it’s best to keep these general “Do’s” and “Don’ts” in mind when answering Writing Task 2:
What To Do:
1. DO read the question carefully and decide how you want to answer it. Identify key words and ensure you understand which essay type you must write (for example, an Opinion Essay or a Two-Part Essay).
2. DO take the time to plan your outline and notes. Many students start writing immediately, which can make it hard to stay organized. Taking at least one minute to plan your essay will greatly improve your score. Most essays should include four paragraphs: Introduction, Body 1, Body 2, and Conclusion.
3. DO start writing as soon as your outline is clear. Remember, you’ll have 40 minutes for this section if you spend no more than 20 minutes on Writing Task 1.
In general:
DO use proper and formal language.
DO make one straight line through a mistake, then write the correction beside it (e.g., bacround background).
What Not To Do:
DON’T start writing immediately without outlining your essay.
DON’T write too much or too little. Stay around 250 words.
DON’T spend too many sentences on your introduction or conclusion—focus on your argument.
DON’T use informal language or make careless errors.
