What are Diagram Labelling questions?
IELTS Listening diagram labelling questions test whether you can place a letter on a plan while the recording describes it. The question may ask about a compass point, a corner, a route, or a place described by what is next to it. Here are the main types of information to listen for in diagram labelling questions.
Strategy:
- Compass and Relative Direction. Look at the plan before the recording starts and decide which side is north. On most plans north is the top and east is the right, unless a compass on the plan shows something else. The speaker rarely says the plain word. A point at the top may be called the upper edge, the northernmost part, or the far side of the plan, and all three mean the same place.
- Corners and Diagonals. Two directions are often given together, so one point can be described as both north and east at the same time. Hold both parts in mind, because one part on its own can fit more than one point on the plan. A speaker may also place something by what it sits across from. Diagonally opposite means you cut across the plan to the other side, not along one edge.
- Movement and Navigation. Some recordings walk you along a route instead of naming a side of the plan. Put your finger on the place the speaker starts from and move it as the speaker moves, because each new instruction is given from the point you have reached. Listen for what happens to the route: whether it goes straight on, turns, passes something, crosses something, or splits. A place is often named just after one of those changes.
- Relative Position. A place can be described by the thing next to it rather than by a direction. The speaker names a feature you can already see on the plan, then says where the new place sits in relation to it. Words such as opposite, behind, in front of, and surrounded by each point to a different side of that feature, so find the named feature first and then check the whole description against the lettered point.
Strategy reminder: Compass and Relative Direction. Look at the plan before the recording starts and decide which side is north. Guide: Welcome to the Riverside Campus open day. When you look at the map with the main gate at the bottom, the library is the first building you need to find. It is situated at the northernmost point of the site plan, directly above the central fountain and well away from the service road.
Guide: Moving across to the sports facilities, the indoor hall is not in the centre of the campus. It is over on the right-hand side, extending towards the eastern wing of the site, on your right as you look at the plan.
Guide: At the opposite end of the same plan, you'll notice the delivery bay and the waste bins grouped together. That whole service area is lying at the base of the layout, directly down towards the southern boundary where the creek runs along the edge of the property.
Guide: Finally, the student accommodation blocks are grouped on the quieter side of the development. They are tucked away in the left-hand corner, facing towards the western edge of the property and to the left of the main central axis.
Let’s solve it using the strategy.

1. library (A): is situated at the northernmost point places the library at the top of the plan.
2. indoor sports hall (B): is over on the right-hand side and eastern wing place the hall on the east.
3. service area (C): is lying at the base and southern boundary place the delivery bay at the bottom.
4. student accommodation (D): are tucked away in the left-hand corner and western edge place the blocks on the west.
Map tip: On most IELTS plans, north = top and east = right unless the map shows a compass rose.

Guide: The building plan in your booklet shows several departments spread across four floors. The administration office, however, is in a separate wing altogether. It is tucked into the far top-right corner of the building plan, set apart from the main corridor and the public lift.
Guide: Staff who drive in each morning use a dedicated area away from visitor parking. Those bays occupy the northwestern corner of the site map, near the perimeter footpath and the northwest boundary of the campus.
Guide: For waste and recycling, the council asks visitors to use the marked collection point at the back of the site. You'll find the recycling bins in the lower right-hand corner, right near the secondary exit, down at the foot of the page on your right.
Guide: Power for the whole facility is generated on site in a small standalone unit. The generator is tucked away in the southwestern pocket of the facility, well away from the main entrance and deep in the bottom-left section of the plan.
Guide: During the summer fair, two temporary structures are set up on the lawn in front of the hall. The medical tent is situated diagonally opposite from the main information desk, so you can reach it quickly if you cut across the grass at an angle.

1. administration office (A): is tucked into the far top-right corner is the northeast of the plan.
2. staff parking (B): occupy the northwestern corner is the top-left.
3. recycling bins (C): in the lower right-hand corner is the southeast.
4. generator (D): is tucked away in the southwestern pocket is the bottom-left.

- 5. woodland trail
- 6. viewing platform

Guide: Once you've collected your visitor badge from the front desk, the route to the main auditorium is straightforward. Carry straight on past the reception desk until you reach the end of the hall, and the double doors to the auditorium are directly in front of you.
Guide: The woodland trail follows the edge of the lake for several hundred metres through the trees. Just before you hit the main lake, the path veers to the left, away from the water and towards the car park on the other side.
Guide: Many visitors try to walk through the main building to reach the lake, but that adds ten minutes to the journey. If you bypass the main building entirely via the gravel path, you will save time and arrive at the lakeside much sooner.
Guide: The pavilion sits in the middle of the open lawn, and the paved path goes all the way around the edge. Don't walk around the grass — cut across the lawn to get to the pavilion, and you'll be there in under a minute.
Guide: After the footbridge, the woodland walk continues for another two kilometres through the pines. When the path forks, take the right-hand trail towards the woods rather than the left route that leads back to the car park.
Guide: Follow the fence line past the old barn until the track meets a wider lane at the edge of the field. At the T-junction, turn left and follow the path along the fence until you see the viewing platform ahead of you.

Guide: The courtyard lies between the two main teaching blocks at the centre of the campus. The bookshop is directly opposite the main entrance, on the other side of the courtyard, so you face it as soon as you step out of the foyer.
Guide: Staff vehicles enter from the side road behind the campus, away from the public car park. The staff parking lot is located at the rear of the main building, backing onto the railway line that runs along the northern boundary.
Guide: The river curves sharply before it joins the canal at the bottom of the site plan. The first-aid tent is tucked into the bend where the river turns south, in the angle between the water and the footpath.
Guide: The picnic lawn is a popular spot in summer because it feels quiet and sheltered from the car park. It is encircled by the walking path on all sides, so children can play without wandering off the grass.
Guide: The orchard plot is isolated from the road by a belt of mature trees that were planted twenty years ago. It is ringed by trees on every side, which also gives shade in the afternoon for visitors.
