Gist-purpose Question

レッスンチャプター 1

A gist-purpose question asks about the main idea or the writer’s purpose.

Identify the main point or overall purpose of a short notice or an academic excerpt. Focus on what the text mostly does or says. These questions test your ability to understand the writer’s intention and the general message of the passage — not the small details. In the test, you should use your strategy to find the answer quickly and confidently.

Strategy:

Start by looking at the first and last sentences. These usually tell you what the whole passage is about. The first sentence introduces the topic, and the last sentence often shows the writer’s main message or conclusion. This saves time because you don’t need to read every line in detail.
Look for repeated or emphasized ideas. When a word, phrase, or topic appears several times, it usually represents the main focus of the passage. Repeated ideas are strong clues that help you quickly identify what the passage mostly talks about.
Ignore small details and examples. Examples and numbers only support the main idea. In the test, do not spend time reading them carefully. Focus instead on sentences that explain or summarize the topic.
Ask yourself, “What is the writer doing?” This is the key question for purpose-type items. Are they describing something? Explaining how something works? Announcing an event? Recognizing this will help you match the correct answer quickly.
Check the answer choices logically. Choose the option that matches what the text mainly does or says. Eliminate any choice that:
- ❌ Mentions a small part of the passage, not the main idea,
- ❌ Gives a wrong purpose (e.g., says “persuade” when the passage only “informs”),
- ❌ Adds information that is not in the text.
Each of these eliminations prevents wasting time rereading the passage.

Daily Life example:

Community well-being goes beyond physical fitness. At Horizon Wellness Studio, we are launching a Monthly Mental Health Talk Series in collaboration with local therapists and counselors. These free sessions will be held on the last Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in our community room and are open to both members and non-members.

Topics will include stress management, mindfulness, work-life balance, and establishing healthy routines. Our goal is to create a safe and welcoming space where open dialogue and shared experiences can support mental and emotional health in our neighborhood.

What is the main purpose of this post?

To promote new workout classes
To advertise a mental health book sale
To announce a free community event focused on mental health
To recruit new members for the studio

Detailed Explanation:

The first sentence introduces the idea of “community well-being,” and the next part explains that the studio is launching a Monthly Mental Health Talk Series. The post gives the time, place, and goal of these talks, which shows it is announcing an event. Therefore, the purpose is not to sell or persuade but to inform the public about a new free program.

(A) “Promote new workout classes” is incorrect — there are no new fitness programs mentioned.
(B) “Advertise a book sale” is wrong — there is no sale in the message.
(D) “Recruit new members” is incorrect — the event is open to both members and non-members, so it is not about recruiting.

The correct answer is (C) because the post’s main goal is to announce a free community event about mental health.

Academic Passage example:

The potlatch is a complex gift-giving feast practiced by several Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, most notably the Kwakwaka’wakw and the Tlingit. Although it is ostensibly a celebration of events such as marriages or naming ceremonies, anthropologists have long noted that the potlatch also serves deeper economic and political purposes within these communities.

During a traditional potlatch, a host clan distributes or even destroys valuable goods—blankets, copper shields, and carved boxes—to rival groups. This dramatic dispersal of wealth accomplishes two goals: it reinforces social hierarchy by proving the host’s ability to command resources, and it redistributes surplus goods in an environment where seasonal food supplies can be unpredictable. In the late nineteenth century, Canadian and U.S. officials banned potlatches, believing that “wasteful” giveaways hindered Indigenous assimilation into a market economy.

Despite this suppression, clandestine ceremonies continued, and legal restrictions were lifted by the 1950s. Contemporary potlatches retain core elements of reciprocity and status display, yet they also incorporate modern items like household appliances and cash. Today, hosting a potlatch is a declaration of cultural resilience, used to teach language, transfer hereditary titles, and assert land claims in court. The ritual therefore illustrates how Indigenous societies adapt long-standing institutions to shifting political and economic landscapes.

What is the purpose of the third paragraph?

To describe how potlatch ceremonies have adapted to modern times and continue to serve key functions
To explain why potlatches were banned by foreign officials
To detail the original structure of the earliest potlatch ceremonies
To compare the potlatch with other gift-giving rituals worldwide

Detailed Explanation:

When you read quickly for purpose, focus on what the paragraph does. The first sentence says, “Despite this suppression, clandestine ceremonies continued,” which signals a change from past to present. Then the paragraph describes how potlatches became legal again and how modern versions now include new items like cash and appliances. The last sentence states that the ritual shows “how Indigenous societies adapt.” Together, these clues show that the paragraph explains how potlatches have changed but still serve important cultural and social roles.

(B) explains why potlatches were banned — that happens earlier, not here.
(C) describes the old structure — also covered in the previous paragraph.
(D) compares rituals — no comparison is made in the text.

The correct answer is (A) because the third paragraph’s purpose is to describe how potlatches have adapted to modern times while keeping their cultural importance.

Tips to Remember:

Use the first and last sentences to find the main idea quickly.
Repeated words or ideas point to the writer’s focus.
Ignore examples and data that only explain details.
Ask, “What is the writer trying to do — describe, explain, or announce?”
Choose the option that fits what the passage mostly does, not one small part.
