名詞 sale 最常見的解釋是「特價拍賣活動;促銷活動」，此時它是可數名詞，可以搭配動詞 to have/hold a sale 。相信以下的拍賣活動大家都聽說過： clearance sale(清倉拍賣)、liquidation sale(清倉拍賣)、summer sale(夏季特賣會)、winter sale(冬季特賣會)、end of season sale(季末特賣會)，在自家車庫或家門口舉行的 garage sale、yard sale(舊物拍賣)等等， Sale 也可以指「銷售案件」，此時它是可數名詞。常搭配動詞 make → to make a sale， Sale 第三個解釋是「銷售量」，此時它會以 sales 複數方式出現， Sale 第四個意思是「銷售部門;門市部」，此時它也是以複數 sales 出現。

在美國，某些店家在做促銷時，最常見的手法之一就是 mail-in rebate (郵寄退款)，對於台灣人來說，這種促銷手法可能很陌生，基本上 mail-in rebate 的做法是我們先購買某樣店家指定的商品，接著廠商會提供一個 rebate form (郵寄退款表格)，之後我們只要將表格填好寄回去，通常在六到八週後就會收到退款的支票，這種方式雖然有點麻煩，但有時候退款金額相當可觀，有的甚至會變成是 free after rebate (全額退回)。
