Connecting Ideas in your Essay
In your TOEFL Academic Discussion essay, you can't just list many unconnected ideas. You need to explain how your thoughts fit together in a clear and logical way. To do that, you can use transition words and phrases that show relationships between ideas.
In this series of lessons, you will learn how to use twelve connection types that make your writing more natural and organized.
Part 1: Listing, Addition, and Summary
Part 2: Contrast (including Concession)
Part 3: Similarity and Cause & Effect
Part 4: Giving Examples, Highlighting, and Alternatives
Part 5: Generalizing, Reformulation, and Summary Review
By studying all five parts, you’ll learn how to connect ideas clearly, make your writing easier to read, and show logical relationships between sentences — exactly what TOEFL scorers want to see.
