In this lesson, you will learn the main differences between the IELTS General Training Writing Test and the IELTS Academic Writing Test.

Please note: IELTS Writing Task 2 is the same for both tests.

IELTS Writing General Training

In IELTS Writing General Training Task 1, you are required to write one of three different types of letters:

A Formal Letter
A Semi-Formal Letter
An Informal Letter

The General Training test is designed for people who are immigrating or those who are still in high school.

We’ll explore each letter type in more detail in the following lessons.

In IELTS Writing Academic Task 1, you are required to describe, summarise, or explain one of the following in your own words:

A Chart
A Diagram

This task involves analysing and explaining data, detailing the specific stages of a process, or describing how something works clearly and accurately.
