What is TOEFL?

TOEFL stands for "Test of English as a Foreign Language." It confirms that students have the English skills needed to succeed in academic settings. TOEFL scores are accepted by thousands of institutions worldwide.

The test is just under 2 hours. Scoring uses the old 0-30 scaled scores and a new 1–6 scale (with half bands), and the test adapts to your performance.

Next, you'll learn about each question type associated to each task. NOTE: This is just an overview.

TOEFL Reading Section Tasks

The Reading section is now shorter and adaptive. You’ll see a mix of tasks designed to reflect everyday and academic reading.

• Complete the Words — fill missing parts of words in context.
• Read in Daily Life — interpret practical texts (emails, notices, forms).
• Read an Academic Passage — understand and analyze university-level text.

Expect 35–48 items in about 27 minutes. Strong skimming, scanning, and inference strategies are essential.

TOEFL Listening Section Tasks

The Listening section focuses on quick, real-world comprehension in academic and campus contexts.

• Listen and Choose a Response — hear a short utterance and select the most appropriate reply.
• Listen to a Conversation — answer questions about a brief student–staff or student–student exchange.
• Listen to an Announcement — interpret main points and key details from a short message.
• Listen to an Academic Talk — understand key ideas and organization in a mini-lecture.

Expect 35–45 items in about 27 minutes. Note-taking should be concise; prioritize main ideas and purpose.

TOEFL Speaking Section Tasks

• Listen and Repeat — repeat brief prompts accurately and naturally.
• Take an Interview — a short, topic-focused interview with several quick responses.

The Speaking section has 11 items and takes about 8 minutes. Clarity, pacing, and precise repetition matter more than length.

TOEFL Writing Section Tasks

• Build a Sentence — form correct, meaningful sentences from provided parts.
• Write an Email — produce an effective email for a campus or academic situation.
• Write for an Academic Discussion — contribute a well-supported post in an online class thread.

Expect 12 items in about 23 minutes. Plan briefly, write clearly, and support points with relevant details.
