The word gist refers to the main point or central idea. Gist-Purpose questions ask you to identify the overall purpose of the conversation or lecture—essentially, why the exchange takes place.
These questions focus on the big picture rather than individual details. To answer correctly, think about the speaker’s main goal or intention—for example, to request help, explain a concept, make a suggestion, or solve a problem.

What are Gist-Purpose questions?
TOEFL Listening gist purpose questions test whether you can identify why the speaker is talking. The question may ask about the reason given at the start, the main goal of the speaker, what most of the talk focuses on, or how the ending confirms that purpose. Here are the main types of information to listen for in gist purpose questions.
Strategy:
- Listen for the reason introduced at the beginning. Speakers usually reveal their reason early. They introduce a problem, ask a question, or describe a situation, and the rest of the audio deals with it. A topic tells you what the audio is about. A purpose tells you why the speaker is talking about it. Listen for the need that starts the talk.
- Listen for the speaker's main goal. Ask what the speaker is trying to accomplish. Common goals are getting information, solving a problem, explaining an idea, making a request, and informing listeners about a change. Say that goal to yourself in one short sentence that begins with the word to, then look for the choice that matches it.
- Listen for what most of the listening focuses on. The correct purpose explains the whole audio, not one detail, one example, or one side point. A wrong choice is often true but far too small. Ask which choice most of the audio is working toward. A choice that repeats a word you heard but covers only a few seconds of the talk is a trap.
- Use the ending to confirm the purpose. The ending often confirms the purpose. A final solution, conclusion, decision, or next step shows what the speaker was working toward all along. When you are unsure halfway through, keep listening. Use the last few lines to test the goal you chose earlier.
Strategy reminder: Listen for the reason introduced at the beginning. Speakers usually reveal their reason early. They introduce a problem, ask a question, or describe a situation, and the rest of the audio deals with it. A topic tells you what the audio is about. A purpose tells you why the speaker is talking about it. Listen for the need that starts the talk.

Announcer: This announcement is for students who use the north campus parking lot. Beginning tomorrow morning, the entrance on College Avenue will be closed while crews repair the pavement. Drivers should enter from Hill Street instead. The work is expected to continue through Friday.
Let’s solve it using the strategy.
- Use the strategy. Listen for the reason introduced at the beginning. Speakers usually reveal their reason early. They introduce a problem, ask a question, or describe a situation, and the rest of the audio deals with it. A topic tells you what the audio is about. A purpose tells you why the speaker is talking about it. Listen for the need that starts the talk.
- Purpose: The speaker opens with a parking problem and immediately tells drivers what to do. A permanent closure and a new entrance plan are not the goal. The purpose is to redirect drivers during repairs.
- Eliminate A. This choice says every campus entrance will shift. Only the College Avenue entrance to the north lot is closed. Drivers should enter from Hill Street.
- Eliminate B. This choice says that lot will shut forever. The work is expected to continue through Friday. The closure is temporary.
- Eliminate C. This choice says repairs will go on indefinitely. The announcement names Friday as the expected end. The purpose is to redirect drivers during those repairs.
- Correct answer: D.

Sample Question:
What is the main purpose of the lecture?
- To describe how birds choose and defend nesting sites
- To outline cues that keep migrants on course
- To compare the body size of several migrating species
- To discuss why some migration routes have changed

Professor: Today I want to look at a question that puzzled biologists for years. How do certain birds return to the same nesting area after traveling thousands of kilometers? For a long time, researchers could not explain that accuracy. They knew that birds migrate, but they did not know how the animals stayed on course. Later studies showed that birds rely on several kinds of information. Some species use the position of the sun during the day. Others appear to use the pattern of stars at night. Many birds can also sense Earth's magnetic field. These cues do not all work in the same conditions. Clouds can hide the sun, and city lights can hide stars. Magnetic information may be especially useful when visual cues disappear. We will examine how each of these sources helps birds navigate. I am not going to focus on why they choose a particular nest site. The question is how they find their way over such long distances.
- Purpose: The professor introduces a research question about returning to the same area, then spends the talk on sun, stars, and magnetic cues. Nesting is mentioned only as the destination. The purpose is to outline cues that keep migrants on course.
- Eliminate A. This choice is about how birds choose and defend nesting sites. The professor says he will not focus on why they choose a nest. The talk is about cues that keep migrants on course.
- Eliminate C. This choice is about comparing body size. Body size is never mentioned. The lecture outlines sun, stars, and magnetic cues.
- Eliminate D. This choice is about why some routes have changed. Changing routes is never the question. The purpose is to explain how birds stay on course.
- Correct answer: B.

(B) Announce training for volunteer facilitators only is incorrect because training is mentioned, but it is presented as a secondary detail supporting the expansion, not the sole focus of the announcement.
(C) Change the room for counseling center events is incorrect because Room 112 is given for the new meetings, yet the room change is not the primary topic; it is merely logistical information.
(D) Cancel Tuesday and Friday group gatherings is incorrect because the announcement actually adds Tuesday and Friday sessions rather than canceling them.
