What are Matching questions?

IELTS Listening matching questions test whether you can match a lettered option to each numbered item. The speaker may paraphrase an option, talk about more than one time period, change a first decision, or flip a cause and a result. Here are the main traps to watch for in matching questions.

Strategy:

• Concept Matching Traps. The lettered options are short and general. The speaker gives the same idea in a longer and more natural way, so the printed words are rarely the words you hear. Read every option before the recording starts and decide what each one would sound like in ordinary speech. A word from one option can also appear beside a different item, so match on meaning instead.
• The Timeline Trap. Options often describe a stage in time: what is already finished, what is happening now, and what is planned for later. A speaker usually mentions more than one of those stages for the same item. The question asks about one stage only, so read it again before the recording starts. Then listen for the time words that tell you which stage the speaker means.
• The Final Decision Trap. Speakers often open with a general statement or with easy agreement, and then change it. Words such as however, but, and actually are a signal that the real answer is coming. Do not choose a letter on the first reasonable thing you hear. Stay with the item until the speaker moves on, because the last thing said about it is the answer.
• The Inversion Trap. The question and the recording do not always run in the same direction. A question may name a result and ask for its cause, while the speaker names the cause first and the result afterwards. Listen for what led to what, not for the order of the words. A cause that the speaker mentions and then rejects is a trap, so check that the answer you choose is the one the speaker keeps.
