The TOEFL iBT now uses an adaptive design with modern task types across Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. BestMyTest will help you master every section.

What is TOEFL?

TOEFL stands for "Test of English as a Foreign Language." It confirms that students have the English skills needed to succeed in academic settings. TOEFL scores are accepted by thousands of institutions worldwide.

Test Section	Tasks / Items	Estimated Timing
READING	35–48 items across 3 task types: Complete the Words Read in Daily Life Read an Academic Passage (current reading task, but with a much shorter passage and fewer questions)	About 27 minutes
LISTENING	35–45 items across 4 task types: Listen and Choose a Response Listen to a Conversation Listen to an Announcement Listen to an Academic Talk	About 27 minutes

SPEAKING	11 items / 2 task formats: Listen and Repeat(7 items) Take an Interview(4 items)	About 8 minutes

The test is just under 2 hours. Scoring uses the old 0-30 scaled scores and a new 1–6 scale (with half bands), and the test adapts to your performance.

Next, you'll learn about each question type associated to each task. NOTE: This is just an overview.

The first section you’ll complete is the Reading section.

Read in Daily Life — interpret practical texts (emails, notices, forms).
Read an Academic Passage — understand and analyze university-level text.

Expect 35–48 items in about 27 minutes. Strong skimming, scanning, and inference strategies are essential.

The second section is the Listening section.

TOEFL Listening Section Tasks

The Listening section focuses on quick, real-world comprehension in academic and campus contexts.

Listen and Choose a Response — hear a short utterance and select the most appropriate reply.
Listen to a Conversation — answer questions about a brief student–staff or student–student exchange.
Listen to an Announcement — interpret main points and key details from a short message.
Listen to an Academic Talk — understand key ideas and organization in a mini-lecture.

The third section is the Speaking section.

TOEFL Speaking Section Tasks
