To answer correctly, pay attention to transitions, reference words, and logical relationships between ideas. Understanding the flow and purpose of each paragraph will help you identify the author’s organizational strategy.
Lesson Introduction
Bolum 1
Organization questions test how ideas are arranged within a passage. You may be asked to recognize cause–effect, problem–solution, comparison–contrast, or chronological structures. These questions measure your ability to see how information is built step by step or connected by logic. Recognizing the pattern helps you understand the author’s method and locate key points faster during the test.
Strategy:
- Read the question carefully. Look for clues such as “How is the information organized?” or “What structure does the author use?” These questions ask about how ideas are presented, not what they say.
- Identify signal words and patterns.
Authors use transition words to show structure.
- Chronological: first, next, later, then, finally
- Cause–effect: because, as a result, therefore, leads to
- Problem–solution: the issue, the challenge, to fix this, the solution
- Comparison–contrast: similarly, unlike, on the other hand, in contrast
- Focus on the paragraph flow. Ask yourself: Is the writer explaining a process, showing differences, giving reasons, or describing events over time? The answer type will reflect that pattern.
- Eliminate answers that don’t match the overall flow. Some options may use the right words but describe the wrong structure. Focus on the main organization across the passage, not one sentence.
- Confirm your answer with the first and last sentences. Openings often introduce the method (e.g., “First…” or “In contrast…”), and endings summarize it. Reading both gives a quick clue to the structure.

How is the information in this email organized?
- Comparison–contrast of reporting methods
- Problem–solution structure
- Chronological sequence of steps to complete a process
- Cause–effect explanation of missed deadlines
Detailed Explanation:
The email presents a clear sequence of steps: first download, then complete, next upload, and finally receive confirmation. These time-based instructions show a chronological structure — events happening in order. The other options don’t fit: the email doesn’t compare anything, present a problem, or explain a cause and effect.
- (A) is incorrect because there’s no comparison between methods.
- (B) is wrong because no problem or solution is discussed.
- (D) doesn’t fit — the message doesn’t describe any cause or result of missed deadlines.
The correct answer is (C) because the instructions are given in a logical time order — one step after another.
Academic Passage example:
[1] Over the past decade, the rise of the so-called gig economy has been precipitous, transforming the landscape of work for companies and individuals alike. Enabled by digital platforms such as ride-sharing apps, food-delivery services, and freelance marketplaces, this model replaces long-term employment contracts with on-demand assignments. Economists estimate that in the United States alone more than one third of the labor force has earned money from gig platforms at least once, and the proportion is growing. Firms are attracted by the ability to scale labor capacity quickly without committing to benefits, while workers cite flexibility and supplemental income as major motivations. Yet commentators warn that the very fluidity that powers the system also blurs traditional definitions of employer, employee, and workplace protection.
[2] From a business perspective, platform operators have crafted a two-sided market: they collect commissions from consumers seeking convenience and from service providers eager for exposure. Because transactions occur online, operators accumulate vast datasets on pricing, consumer habits, and worker performance. These data fuel dynamic algorithms that match supply with demand in real time, driving down idle time and raising asset utilization. However, the model contains hidden costs. High worker turnover demands continuous recruitment spending, and public opinion can shift rapidly when stories of unfair pay go viral on social media. Moreover, companies must reconcile the promise of independence with calls for greater security; surveys reveal that many gig workers would accept lower nominal wages in exchange for health insurance or predictable schedules.
[3] Governments have begun to intervene in response to these tensions. California’s Assembly Bill 5, the European Union’s proposed Platform Work Directive, and similar measures in India all attempt to reclassify certain contractors as employees, extending minimum-wage and social-security coverage. Critics argue that heavy regulation could stifle innovation by raising labor costs, while supporters claim that clearer rules will level the playing field between gig platforms and traditional employers. Whether regulation proves restrictive or enabling will hinge on execution: policymakers must balance consumer convenience, corporate profitability, and worker welfare. For managers, the immediate task is strategic adaptability—building compliance mechanisms without sacrificing the algorithmic efficiencies that give platforms their competitive edge.
What is the relationship between paragraphs 2 and 3?
- Paragraph 3 provides data to support the business strategies described in paragraph 2.
- Paragraph 3 addresses regulatory responses to the issues described in paragraph 2.
- Paragraph 3 elaborates on worker experiences mentioned in paragraph 2.
- Paragraph 3 challenges the economic claims made in paragraph 2.
Detailed Explanation:
Paragraph 2 focuses on how gig platforms operate as businesses and highlights both efficiencies (data-driven matching and higher utilization) and problems (turnover, reputational risk, and pressure for benefits). Paragraph 3 then explains what happens in response to those tensions: governments introduce laws and directives to reclassify contractors and expand protections. This shows a clear relationship: paragraph 3 presents the regulatory response to the issues raised in paragraph 2.
- (A) is incorrect because paragraph 3 does not present data that supports the business strategies; it discusses regulation.
- (C) is incorrect because paragraph 3 is about government actions and policy debates, not additional details about individual workers’ daily experiences.
- (D) is incorrect because paragraph 3 does not dispute the economic points in paragraph 2; it builds on them by showing how policymakers react.
The correct answer is (B) because paragraph 3 describes regulatory responses to the concerns and trade-offs explained in paragraph 2.
Academic Passage example 2:
Archaeologists studying the rise of ancient cities often describe urbanization as a gradual process rather than a single event. In early agricultural societies, villages expanded as surplus food enabled population growth. Over time, these settlements developed more specialized labor systems, leading to permanent markets and administrative centers.
As populations increased, city planners began organizing space for distinct purposes—residential quarters, religious temples, and public storage facilities. Trade networks formed between regions, and roads were constructed to connect distant settlements. This physical and social reorganization marked the shift from rural clusters to urban landscapes.
The passage of time reveals a clear pattern: population growth created the need for specialized roles, which in turn encouraged economic exchange and infrastructural planning. By tracing these stages, researchers demonstrate how urban centers emerged through a sequence of interdependent developments rather than a sudden transformation.
How is the information in the passage organized?
- Comparison between rural and urban religious practices
- Chronological sequence showing the gradual emergence of cities
- Problem–solution structure explaining how cities overcame food shortages
- Cause–effect structure linking agriculture to political decline
Detailed Explanation:
The passage describes the development of cities over time — from small villages to urban centers. It uses transition phrases like “Over time” and “As populations increased,” which show a chronological order. The information is arranged by time sequence, not by problem, comparison, or cause–effect.
- (A) is wrong — religion is only mentioned briefly, not compared.
- (C) is incorrect — there’s no discussion of food shortages or solutions.
- (D) is wrong — the passage doesn’t discuss political decline.
The correct answer is (B) because the passage shows the step-by-step process of how urbanization developed over time.
Tips to Remember:
- Organization questions test how ideas are presented, not what they mean.
- Watch for signal words that show order or relationship between ideas.
- Identify the pattern: Chronological (time order), Cause–Effect (reason and result), Problem–Solution (issue and fix), or Comparison–Contrast (similarities and differences).
- Eliminate options that don’t match the passage’s overall flow.
- The right answer describes the main structure of the text, not one sentence or paragraph alone.

[2] Kinship ties also facilitate economic cooperation. When a drought reduces one family's herd, lineage mates are obligated to lend animals, a rule known locally as stock friendship. Disputes over grazing rights are settled at councils composed of senior males from related segments, thereby preventing small quarrels from escalating into violent feuds. Through repeated acts of reciprocity, the lineage system functions as an insurance network in a landscape where formal institutions are scarce.
[3] Today, expansion of national borders, schools, and wage labor is transforming pastoral life. Younger herders spend seasons in towns, sending money home rather than sharing cattle. Some scholars argue that cash payments weaken the moral force of kinship obligations, while others note that lineage councils now mediate access to trucking fees and veterinary drugs as readily as they once allocated pastures. Such adaptability suggests the segmentary system still provides a crucial framework for collective action.

done Dogru! Cevap "((D))".
clear Tam olarak degil. Dogru cevap ((D)).
(A) 'Paragraph 3 introduces a new social group that replaces the lineage system from paragraph 2' is incorrect because paragraph 3 describes changes to pastoral life but never says the lineage system is replaced by a different group.
(B) 'Paragraph 3 rejects the importance of kinship ties outlined in paragraph 2' is incorrect because paragraph 3 suggests kinship obligations may weaken for some, but it also shows lineage councils still matter and adapt to new needs.
(C) 'Paragraph 3 summarizes the rules for herd-sharing mentioned in paragraph 2' is incorrect because paragraph 3 does not restate the stock-friendship rules; instead it focuses on modern transformations and adaptation.

[2] One common hydroponic design is the Nutrient Film Technique, a shallow channel where a thin sheet of solution continuously flows across bare roots. The moving film delivers oxygen and minerals simultaneously, recycling water so efficiently that lettuce can be produced with as little as one tenth of the irrigation required in soil. In arid regions, such frugality has made hydroponic greenhouses a viable alternative to importing fresh produce.
[3] Aeroponics builds on this conservation ethic by eliminating the liquid stream altogether; high-pressure nozzles spray an atomized fog that coats roots with microscopic droplets. The large air gap maximizes oxygen exposure, accelerating root metabolism and shortening harvest cycles. Moreover, closed chambers prevent pathogen spread and allow easy monitoring of root health. Researchers predict that, as energy costs decline and automation improves, aeroponic farms could be stacked vertically in cities, supplying leafy greens within walking distance of consumers.

clear Tam olarak degil. Dogru cevap ((C)).
(A) 'Paragraph 3 repeats the data presented earlier without adding new insights' is incorrect because paragraph 3 introduces a different method (aeroponics) and adds new mechanisms and benefits.
(B) 'Paragraph 3 rejects the efficiency examples offered earlier as unrealistic' is incorrect because paragraph 3 builds on the conservation idea rather than criticizing it.
(D) 'Paragraph 3 summarizes the historical background introduced earlier in paragraph 2' is incorrect because paragraph 2 is not historical background; it is a technical example, and paragraph 3 extends the comparison rather than summarizing history.

[2] The intellectual roots of the nudge trace back to prospect theory, which shows that people systematically deviate from the purely rational model assumed by classical economics. Loss aversion, status-quo bias, and limited self-control make individuals responsive to small contextual cues. Governments have therefore created specialized “nudge units” that send text reminders about tax deadlines or automatically enroll citizens in pension plans while still allowing them to opt out. Studies report significant rises in compliance and saving rates at minimal cost.
[3] Critics warn, however, that nudging can become manipulative if the architect’s goals conflict with the chooser’s welfare. They argue for transparency and periodic evaluation to ensure that interventions remain ethical. Supporters counter that the environment is always influencing decisions, so intentionally designing it for public benefit is preferable to leaving it to chance or to commercial interests. As evidence accumulates, the debate centers less on whether nudges work and more on how, when, and by whom they should be deployed.
How does paragraph 3 relate to paragraph 2?

clear Tam olarak degil. Dogru cevap ((B)).
(A) 'Paragraph 3 provides statistical evidence supporting claims in paragraph 2' is incorrect because paragraph 3 does not present new data; it presents a debate.
(C) 'Paragraph 3 introduces historical background for concepts in paragraph 2' is incorrect because historical roots are already discussed in paragraph 2 (prospect theory), and paragraph 3 shifts to ethical concerns.
(D) 'Paragraph 3 repeats examples from paragraph 2 without adding new information' is incorrect because paragraph 3 adds criticisms and supporters’ counterarguments rather than repeating the know-what-to-do examples.

[2] The power of LiDAR became clear in a 2009 survey of the Maya city of Caracol in Belize. Previously, ground crews had documented several monumental plazas and palaces, leading scholars to describe Caracol as a medium-sized ceremonial center. The LiDAR data, however, exposed an extensive urban landscape encompassing nearly 200 square kilometers. Terraced hillsides, reservoirs, and thousands of residential mounds emerged from the digital model, along with elevated causeways linking neighborhoods and outlying villages. Defensive walls encircling the settlement suggested periods of conflict, while the distribution of agricultural terraces indicated sophisticated land-management strategies. Similar revelations have followed at Tikal, Calakmul, and other lowland sites, suggesting that the Maya supported far larger and denser populations than had been assumed.
[3] These discoveries carry important implications. First, they demonstrate that the ancient Maya engineered their environment on a scale comparable to early city-states in Mesopotamia or China. Second, they challenge long-held views that tropical ecosystems could sustain only small, scattered communities. Finally, they highlight the value of revisiting well-studied areas with new tools; even sites excavated for decades can yield surprises when examined from the air. LiDAR is not a panacea—ground verification, excavation, and dating are still required—but it has shifted the starting point of archaeological inquiry from guesswork to informed hypothesis. As the cost of airborne lasers falls, similar breakthroughs are expected in the Amazon, Southeast Asia, and Central Africa.

clear Tam olarak degil. Dogru cevap ((B)).
(A) 'Paragraph 3 offers practical challenges to the discoveries discussed in paragraph 2' is incorrect because although paragraph 3 notes LiDAR is not a “panacea,” its main focus is the broader implications, not practical obstacles to the discoveries.
(C) 'Paragraph 3 compares LiDAR to other archaeological technologies introduced in paragraph 2' is incorrect because paragraph 3 does not introduce or compare other technologies; it discusses consequences of LiDAR-based findings.
(D) 'Paragraph 3 gives recent case studies to reinforce the evidence given in paragraph 2' is incorrect because paragraph 3 is not another case study; it is a general discussion of implications and future expectations.
