Questions 1-4

Read the job advertisements, A-E.

Which advertisement corresponds to the following information?

NB You may use any letter more than once.

1. Which job requires domestic travel?

2. Which job requires past experience?

3. Which advertisement pertains to educators?

4. Which job features seasonal work?

The answer is C. Paragraph C contains the following key information: "Candidates must currently reside in the United States and can expect to make monthly visits to out-of-state sites during the first two years of employment." This indicates that the job requires domestic travel within the United States, as the candidates must live in the US and travel to different states for work. None of the other adverts mention domestic travel. Therefore, C is correct.

Associated Text:
Candidates must currently reside in the United States and can expect to make monthly visits to out-of-state sites during the first two years of employment.

The answer is A. Paragraph A begins with the question: "Have you previously worked in the hotel industry and know what it takes to succeed?" This makes it clear that past experience is required for this position. No other paragraph specifically mentions the need for previous work experience. Thus, A is the correct answer.

Associated Text:
Have you previously worked in the hotel industry and know what it takes to succeed?

The answer is D. Paragraph D explicitly calls for an "English Tutor for the High School division of English as a Second Language students." The mention of an 'English Tutor' and 'High School division' indicates that this advertisement is directed toward educators. Therefore, D is correct.

Associated Text:
Criswick & Co. are looking for an English Tutor for the High School division of English as a Second Language students. Must be accredited and familiar with preparation for various state exams.

The answer is D. Paragraph D states: "Current positions that need to be filled will offer fixed contracts from January to April." This indicates that employment is only for a fixed period, meaning the work is seasonal, corresponding to the school term stated. Therefore, D provides evidence for a seasonal position.

Associated Text:
Current positions that need to be filled will offer fixed contracts from January to April.

Questions 5-8
Complete the short answers below.

Choose NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS from the passage for each answer.

Write your answers in 5-8 on your answer sheet.

5. You do not want to renew your lease. What must you provide to your landlord in order to terminate the contract?

6. What could be added to the rent of the final month if a contract is not terminated properly?

7. You want to renew your lease. With whom must you schedule a meeting?

8. You have questions regarding contract termination. Who should you contact?

The answer is a written request / written request. In Paragraph 5, it is stated: "In the event that a tenant does not wish to renew his or her lease in Bradbury Apartments, a written request to terminate the agreement must be received by the landlord no later than two weeks before the contract's end date." This makes it clear what is required to end the contract.

Associated Text:
In the event that a tenant does not wish to renew his or her lease in Bradbury Apartments, a written request to terminate the agreement must be received by the landlord no later than two weeks before the contract's end date.

The answer is additional fees. In Paragraph 6, the text reads: "If the notice is not received within the necessary timeframe, additional fees may be accrued to the final rent payment." This shows exactly what could be added to the final rent if the contract is not properly terminated.

Associated Text:
If the notice is not received within the necessary timeframe, additional fees may be accrued to the final rent payment.

The answer is Housing Cooperative Board. Paragraph 7 says: "...should a tenant decide to renew his or her lease, a meeting with the Housing Cooperative Board must be requested on behalf of the tenant no later than three months before the contract's end date." This clearly identifies whom you need to meet if you want to renew your lease.

Associated Text:
should a tenant decide to renew his or her lease, a meeting with the Housing Cooperative Board must be requested on behalf of the tenant no later than three months before the contract's end date.

The answer is Housing Cooperative President. Paragraph 8 provides: "For any questions regarding these processes, contact the Housing Cooperative President at your convenience." This includes any questions about contract termination.

Associated Text:
For any questions regarding these processes, contact the Housing Cooperative President at your convenience.

Questions 9-14
Do the following statements agree with the information given in the reading passage? In boxes 9-14 on your answer sheet, write

TRUE   if the statement agrees with the information
FALSE   if the statement contradicts the information
NOT GIVEN   if there is no information on this.

9. Previously, Barmont County City Workers collected recycling refuse on Sundays.

10. Obtaining the Barmont County Recycling Card is free of charge.

11. Failure to recycle the correct items will lead to an automatic fine.

12. There have not been changes regarding items that cannot be recycled.

13. All glass must be recycled.

14. If waste that cannot be recycled is found in recycled waste at least 50 times, City Waste Taxes will increase.

The answer is TRUE. In the Pick-Up Times section, it states: "Contrary to last year's schedule, pick-up will no longer take place on Sundays." This means that previously, there was Sunday pick-up, confirming the statement as true.

Associated Text:
Contrary to last year's schedule, pick-up will no longer take place on Sundays.

The answer is NOT GIVEN. The passage only mentions: "If residents are unable to abide by the aforementioned pick-up times, they can request a Recycling Card through the Town Hall..." There is no information about a fee or free charge for obtaining the card.

Associated Text:
If residents are unable to abide by the aforementioned pick-up times, they can request a Recycling Card through the Town Hall, in order to transport recycling refuse to the Barmont County Ecological Island.

The answer is FALSE. The guidelines state: "If it is discovered that a resident has not properly recycled any of the above items, a fine may be issued." The use of "may" means a fine is not automatic; it is possible, but not certain for every violation.

Associated Text:
If it is discovered that a resident has not properly recycled any of the above items, a fine may be issued.

The answer is TRUE. The passage states: "Identical to previous years, the following items remain unable to be recycled: Batteries, Clothing, Electronic Waste, Food Waste..." This confirms there have been no recent changes regarding non-recyclable items.

Associated Text:
Identical to previous years, the following items remain unable to be recycled: Batteries, Clothing, Electronic Waste, Food Waste, Hazardous Waste, Medical Waste, Diapers, Glass (from windows or frames)

The answer is FALSE. In the "What Can Be Recycled" section, it lists "Glass Bottles," while in the "What Cannot Be Recycled" section, it specifies "Glass (from windows or frames)." This shows not all glass is recyclable; only certain types are.

Associated Text:
Aluminum Cans, Cardboard, Egg Cartons, Plastic Materials, Glass Bottles, Paper, Empty Aerosols; Batteries, Clothing, Electronic Waste, Food Waste, Hazardous Waste, Medical Waste, Diapers, Glass (from windows or frames)

The answer is NOT GIVEN. While the passage mentions: "If occurrences exceed a given amount, City Waste Taxes will increase in the following fiscal year," it does not specify a number such as 50 instances required for the increase.

Associated Text:
If occurrences exceed a given amount, City Waste Taxes will increase in the following fiscal year.

Tips to improve your reading speed
To get a high score on the IELTS reading section, you need to have a fast reading speed. To have a fast reading speed, you need to improve your vocabulary and practice dissecting sentences. One strategy to dissect a sentence is to look for the subject and verb of the sentence. Finding the subject and verb will help you better understand the main idea of said sentence. Keep in mind, a common feature of a IELTS reading passage is to join strings of ideas to form long compound sentences. This produces large chunks that students have a hard time absorbing. Do not get overwhelmed by its length, just look for the subject and verb, the rest of the ideas will flow.

Keep in mind, having a slow reading speed makes skimming or scanning a reading passage more difficult. The process of quickly skimming through a reading passage for specific keywords or main ideas is a requirement for you to employ successful reading strategies to improve your IELTS reading score. In other words, skimming and scanning are critical skills to ensure you complete all questions in the allotted time frame.
IELTS Reading Strategies
Once you can read and comprehend a passage with a rate of, at least, 220 words per minute, you'll be ready to start implementing our strategies. All too often, students spend too much time reading the passages and not enough time answering the questions. Here is a step by step guide for tackling the reading section.

  1. Step 1: Read questions first

One of the most common mistakes that candidates make when approaching the reading exam is reading every single word of the passages. Although you can practice for the exam by reading for pleasure, "reading blindly" (reading without any sense of what the questions will ask) will not do you any favors in the exam. Instead, it will hurt your chances for effectively managing your time and getting the best score.

The main reason to read the questions first is because the type of question may determine what you read in the passage or how you read it. For example, some question types will call for the "skimming" technique, while others may call for the "scanning" technique.

It is important to answer a set of questions that are of the same question type. You'll need to determine which question type you want to tackle first. A good strategy would be to start with the easier question type and move on to more difficult question types later. The Easiest question types are the ones where you spend less time reading. For example, the Matching Heading question type is an easier one because you only need to find the heading that best describes the main idea of a paragraph. An example of a difficult question type would be Identifying Information. For this question type, you'll need to read each paragraph to find out if each statement is TRUE, FALSE, or NOT GIVEN according to the passage.

Here is a table that lists the difficulty levels for each question type. Use this table as a reference when choosing which question type you want to tackle first.

    Difficulty level Question Type
    Easy Sentence Completion
    Short answer
    Medium Matching Features
    Multiple choice
    Matching Headings
    Summary, Table, Flow-Chart Completion
    Difficult Matching Sentence Endings
    Matching Information
    Identifying Information (TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN)
    Identifying Viewer's claims (YES/NO/NOT GIVEN)

  2. Step 2: Read for an objective

After you've read the questions for the passage, you will be able to read for an objective. What does this mean? For example, if you come across a question that includes the year "1896", you can make a note of when this year comes up in the text, using it to answer the question later on. There are two reading techniques that will help you stay on track with reading for an objective. The first one, skimming, is best defined as reading fast in order to get the "gist", or general idea, or a passage. With this technique, you are not stopping for any unfamiliar words or looking for specific details. The second technique, scanning, is best defined as reading for specific information. With this technique, you are not reading for the overall gist, but rather, specific information. Notice how each of these techniques has a specific objective in mind. This will help you find information more quickly.

  3. Step 3: Take notes

As you're reading for an objective, you should also be making notes on the margins of the passage, placing stars next to key information, or underlining things that you believe will help you answer the various questions. This will make it easier for you to check back when you are asked certain things in the questions. Choose whichever note-taking system is right for you - just make sure you do it!

  4. Step 4: Answer wisely

After you've read the questions, read the passage, and have taken any appropriate notes, you you should have located the part of the text where you where you need to read carefully. Then just read carefully and think critically to determine the correct answer.
