It seems to be reasonable to many people that allowing students to choose the course they want can inspire their learning interest and help them find their talents in certain subjects and pursue further development. But if we do a deeper examination of the question, it is not difficult to make the judgment that students should have a set, mandatory curriculum. To ensure the students have a comprehensive knowledge of basic subjects is the main objective of high school education, therefore I disagree with the idea of allowing students to choose courses that they want to study.
To begin, most of us know that the main purpose of school is to provide a systematic education to all students. In order to have students be educated in all required areas, the curriculums must be properly researched and predefined by professional education institutions. If we let students select their courses, we would not be able to guarantee that all necessary subjects would be covered in the regular class time. Moreover, both parents and educators believe that high school education shall provide each student a fundamental knowledge base that is essential to their future development in society. It is the school's responsibility to enforce the rule and make sure that all the necessary information is taught to all students.
On the other hand, we ought to consider introducing some optional courses to high school curriculums so that the students could choose some of their courses within the limitation of a broad syllabus. For example, for art classes, the school could offer music and painting courses and each student could choose either one of them according to his or her personal interest. But this is not to say that the students should have the freedom to choose any and all of their courses.
In conclusion, high school education is a standardized process with a defined curriculum in which major courses are predefined. Allowing students to choose a limited number of their courses from a set of courses that fulfill educational requirements is one thing, but to allow students to choose all their courses is unjustifiable. For, it is the duty of teachers, educators, and parents to ensure that students are educated in all necessary fields and that they build a common foundation for their development beyond high school.
