Part 1

Welcome to your first lesson in TOEFL Speaking.

In this lesson, we’ll explore how the TOEFL Speaking section works and what each task measures.

The Speaking section takes about 8 minutes in total and includes two tasks.

Speaking Task	Details
Listen & Repeat	Listen to a short spoken sentence and repeat it exactly. Sentences vary in length and complexity. This task checks your pronunciation, rhythm, and ability to reproduce natural speech patterns. Items: 7 short prompts Response time: about 8–12 seconds each
Speaking Interview	Answer a series of short questions from an interviewer. Questions are conversational and cover familiar or academic situations. You must respond naturally and clearly, showing your ability to express ideas and opinions. Items: 4 interview questions Response time: 15–30 seconds each

There is no preparation time between items. The entire section is completed in one sitting.

How to prepare effectively.

Listen & Repeat

Practice by listening to short sentences and repeating them aloud. Focus on stress, rhythm, and intonation. Record yourself and compare with native audio to catch pronunciation differences. Try shadowing exercises for fluency.

Speaking Interview

Build confidence by answering short, real-life questions spontaneously. Practice organizing your ideas in one or two clear sentences. Use connectors such as because, so, and for example to show relationships between ideas.

Work on speaking naturally, not memorizing scripts. Practice under timed conditions, listen to high-scoring samples, and note how responses stay relevant, clear, and fluent.

Consistency and practice are key — even short daily sessions will help you improve tone, speed, and clarity.
