admission star_border

/ad-mis-sion/ [ae0.d.m.ih1.sh.ah0.n] /ədˈmɪʃ.ən/ play_circle_filled

The noun "admission" can refer to the money you pay to enter into a place. For example,

  • How much do they charge for admission?
  • Tickets are $10, with free admission for children under age 12.
  • The cost includes free admission to the casinos.

Also, it can generally mean permission to enter a place. "admission to a place" is often used. For example,

  • No admission to the park between 11 P.M. and 6 A.M.

We also often see the word 'admission' on university websites. It means the act or process of accepting someone as a student. The pattern “admission to (a university)” is often used. For example,

  • Congratulations on your admission to the University of Illinois.
  • I failed to gain admission to my dream university.
  • I submitted an application for admission to Harvard.
  • Many students apply for admission to more than one university.

  • As of September 2022, “Top Gun: Maverick” has made $1.45 billion at the global box office and a staggering $705.65 million at the US box office, according to Forbes.

If a movie makes a lot of money, we can say that the movie is a box office hit or a box office success. On the other hand, if a movie doesn't make a lot of money, we can say that the movie is a box office flop, a box office bomb, or a box office failure

  • This film was a huge box office hit.
  • “Space Jam 2” might be a box office bomb.
  • There has been a significant bounce-back for the global box office this year. According to CNBC, box office successes like Top Gun: Maverick and The Batman indicate that the streaming wars have not buried moviegoing entirely.
