IELTS General Writing Test Introduction

In this lesson, we'll look at an overview of the IELTS General Writing Task 1.

Let’s get started!

First, we’ll take a look at Writing Task 1 and go into detail about what is required for this part of the test. Test-takers should allot 20 minutes for Writing Task 1, which requires candidates to write one of three different types of letters:

A Formal Letter – This style is used when writing to people you do not know or have never met. Common examples include job applications or letters to government offices.

A Semi-Formal Letter – This is used when writing to people you know but are not close to, or to someone with whom you have a professional relationship. Examples include writing to your boss or a former professor.

An Informal Letter – This is used for people you know well, such as friends or family. The language is casual and personal. Sometimes this is referred to as a ‘personal style’. Examples include writing condolences to a friend or a note to a family member.

Most IELTS letters will involve one or more of the following purposes:

Personal Correspondence – Letters of condolence, appreciation, or apology. For example: sending sympathy for a loss, thanking a friend for help, or apologizing for missing an event.

Giving or Asking for Personal Information – Requesting or sharing details, such as asking for a friend’s opinion or requesting information about an event.

Expressing Needs, Wants, Likes, or Dislikes – Sharing your viewpoints or preferences, for example expressing how much you enjoyed a film or asking for tickets to another show.

Expressing Opinions (Including Complaints and Viewpoints) – Writing to describe a bad experience or to provide feedback, such as a complaint to a restaurant manager requesting a refund.

As such, it’s helpful to practice writing about these everyday scenarios to prepare effectively for the exam.

The writing prompt will include bullet points outlining exactly what must be covered in your response. It’s crucial that you address each point. The prompt also helps determine which letter type to use. Below is an example:

The writing prompt always contains three main parts: background information (e.g., “you are working for…”), instruction words (e.g., “write a letter…”), and accompanying details. Sometimes, the prompt specifies how to begin your letter. In the example above, test-takers are instructed to start with “Dear ____”.

If no greeting is provided, use your judgment to choose an appropriate one based on your training. Lastly, remember that each letter should be around 150 words.

Quick Tip: While you won’t be penalized for writing more than 150 words, remember that concise, focused writing is best. Writing excessively may reduce the time available for Task 2, which is worth more points.

If you tend to write too much, practice writing more concisely. Doing so helps you express ideas effectively with fewer words, improving both your score and time management.

Now, let’s move on to Writing Task 2.
