IELTS Writing Task 2 Lesson 4 Discussion Essays

In this lesson, we will explore the Discussion essay type in IELTS Academic Writing Task 2.

First, we will go over four steps to approaching the Discussion essay. Then we will take a closer look at how to plan each paragraph. Finally, we will study two example questions and model essays.

After this lesson, you will be prepared to master this part of the exam. Let’s get started!

Now let’s look at the four steps to approaching IELTS Academic Writing Task 2.

1. Read and Understand – The first thing you need to do in Writing Task 2 is to fully understand the question and underline key words. Additionally, consider these two points:

2. Plan your outline – Now you are ready to map out your outline. This should take only 2–3 minutes and will act as your reference. We recommend the following straightforward structure for a Discussion essay:

I. Introduction

II. First View

III. Second View

IV. Conclusion

The difference between a Discussion Essay and other types (such as Advantages/Disadvantages) is that the test-taker has less freedom to choose the number of examples or restructure the essay; the prompt requires coverage of both views.

3. Make outline notes – Once you have your outline, add brief notes using keywords for each paragraph’s main idea. You should already see the “map” of your essay at this stage.

4. Start writing – Begin with the introduction and proceed through the outline. Use a formal tone (avoid contractions; write out numbers under ten) and start a new paragraph clearly after each section.

Below, we detail how each paragraph should be written. Your opinion will be woven through the outline; you do not need a separate “opinion” paragraph. The outline is:

1. Introduction
2. First View
3. Second View
4. Conclusion

In short, your Paragraph Planner might look like this:

I. Introduction

    A. Rewritten question / both views (1 sentence)

    B. Thesis statement (1 sentence)

II. First View

    A. Topic sentence (1)

    B. Explanation / detail (1)

    C. Reason for agreeing / disagreeing (1)

    D. Example (1)

III. Second View

    A. Topic sentence (1)

    B. Explanation / detail (1)

    C. Reason for agreeing / disagreeing (1)

    D. Example (1)

IV. Conclusion

    A. Summary of the main points (1–2)

    B. Final judgement / importance (1–2)

Now we’ve learned the paragraph outline, let’s look at an example. We will use the following question:

Now, let’s analyse the question and do some planning before we start writing the essay.

1. Read and Understand

Underline the key words in the question:

“Some people think that a sense of competition in children should be encouraged. Others believe that children who are taught to co-operate rather than compete become more useful adults. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.”

Now, answer two quick questions:

2. Plan your Outline / 3. Make Outline Notes

We’ve combined these steps. The notes come from the key words and our ideas.

I. Introduction –

    – Emphasis on competition; others focus on co-operation

    – Opinion: Better that children co-operate

II. First View

    – Topic sentence

    – Better results / preparation for the real world

Example: Preparation for university and work

    – However, winning is not everything

        Example: Ignores compassion and generosity

III. Second View

    – Topic sentence

    – Society and work require teamwork

        Example: Company has shared goals

    – Achieving goals takes co-operation

Example: Teamwork and co-operation are essential

IV. Conclusion

    – Both views exist in society

    – Best that children focus on co-operation

Now let’s look at a model essay.

Model Essay

Topic sentences are in bold.

Explanations and details are in red.

Examples are in blue.

Opinions are in green.

Introduction:

While some people argue that we should emphasise the importance of competition when teaching children, others take the view that focusing on co-operation is more important. In my opinion, it is better for children to be taught to co-operate. (39 words)

Paragraph 1:

On one side of the argument, some hold that encouraging competitiveness in children will yield better results. The most compelling reason is that competitiveness prepares them for the real world. When students grow up, for example, they will need to compete with others for a place at university. However, I strongly believe that winning is not everything. A society focused solely on winning and competing ignores important traits like compassion and generosity. (84 words)

Paragraph 2:

Despite these views, others believe that instilling co-operation in children benefits society as a whole. In both society and work, co-operation and teamwork are often required. For instance, a company will only achieve its overall goal if all parts work together and complement each other. Consequently, I believe that co-operation is extremely important and has greater value than competition. Children who learn that beating others is not the priority will be more willing to work together to achieve shared goals. (96 words)

Conclusion:

All in all, there is disagreement in society about the effects of competition on children. I strongly believe that children should be taught compassion and core values, as these have better long-term effects on society. (37 words)

Model Essay

Some people argue that it is not a good idea for teachers to assign home study tasks to schoolchildren, while others say it is an essential part of a child’s educational development. I agree with the latter view because home study tasks help pupils achieve better exam results, giving them a stronger chance of entering higher education.

On the one hand, some people believe that too many home assignments are not beneficial and become a burden for students. Pupils spend their entire day studying at school, and when they return home, they feel tired but still face the pressure of completing their homework. For instance, in Japan, the majority of 12- to 15-year-olds experience immense pressure to finish large amounts of homework. I believe pupils should be given home assignments but not subjected to such stress. Without completing their homework, they might struggle to pass important entrance exams.

On the other hand, others hold the opinion that homework plays a vital role in children’s learning. It helps pupils understand topics more deeply and achieve higher grades. For example, if a pupil regularly practices mathematics exercises at home, they will undoubtedly strengthen their knowledge—something that cannot be achieved solely by studying in class. I agree with this view because it increases their chances of entering college or tertiary education, ultimately leading to better job opportunities.

To conclude, opinions differ regarding whether homework should be given to students. I believe these assignments are necessary because they help pupils earn good grades, secure university placements, and improve their future career prospects.
