IELTS Speaking Part 1 is the warm-up of the Speaking test, but it still counts toward your band. The examiner asks short questions about you and a few everyday topics, and the way you answer them sets the tone for the rest of the test.
This guide gives you the IELTS Speaking Part 1 questions you are most likely to hear in 2026: the opening topics, 12 common everyday topics with questions for each, sample answers with band 9 video answers, and a simple method for answering any Part 1 question naturally.

play_circle_outline Start Free Speaking Part 1 PracticePart 1 is the first of the three parts of the IELTS Speaking test, and it lasts about 4 to 5 minutes. The examiner introduces themselves, checks your identity, and then asks you questions about yourself and two or three familiar topics.
The test is the same in Academic and General Training. For an overview of all three parts, see our IELTS Speaking test guide.
Part 1 usually starts with questions about your work or studies, your hometown, or your home. Prepare these three first, because you are very likely to get one of them. Each topic links to the Part 1 practices that ask about it, so you can answer the questions out loud and get an AI score.

Each sample below follows the same three-step pattern: Answer + Reason → Example or Detail → Result or Extra Detail. That pattern is all a good Part 1 answer needs.
I’m a student at the moment. I’m in my third year of a business degree, which I really enjoy because it’s very practical. This semester, for example, we’re working with a local company on its marketing plan, so it feels like real work rather than just theory.
Why it works: answer + reason (“I’m a student… which I really enjoy because it’s very practical”), a specific example (the marketing project), and a result (“it feels like real work”).
I’d say the best thing is how green it is. There are parks and walking paths almost everywhere, so it’s easy to get outside even if you live in the city centre. On weekends I often go cycling along the river with my friends.
Why it works: answer + reason (“how green it is”), a detail (parks and walking paths everywhere), and a personal extra detail (cycling along the river). Natural phrases such as “I’d say” and “get outside” help too.
It depends on my mood, really. After a busy week I like having some time to myself, maybe reading or watching a series. But on Saturdays I usually meet my friends, because I think it’s important to switch off and have a laugh with people.
Why it works: “it depends” is the answer, each side gets a detail (reading after a busy week, meeting friends on Saturdays), and the last reason (“it’s important to switch off”) finishes the answer.

Well, my hometown is Vancouver, which is a city in Canada. Um, it’s a very cosmopolitan place with people from many different ethnic backgrounds, basically from all over the world. And that kind of diversity is something I really appreciate.

Well, I still feel like I’m part of my hometown, but, you know, I’m also quite different from some of the people who live there. Even though I’ve changed a lot, it’ll always feel like home to me. That said, I don’t really think I’d want to live there in the future.

Currently, I live in an apartment. It’s not very big, but it’s comfortable enough and I have my own bedroom and a small living area. It’s also quite convenient because it’s close to public transport and shops, so overall, it works really well for my daily routine.

Practice speaking questions in our appPart 1 questions ask about your everyday life, such as your home, habits, preferences, and plans. Use the same Direct Answer pattern for every question: Answer + Reason → Example or Detail → Result or Extra Detail. It keeps your answers the right length and gives the examiner enough language to score.
Step | What to say | Example: “Where is your hometown?” |
|---|---|---|
1. Answer + Reason | Give a direct answer, then add one reason. | “Well, my hometown is Vancouver, which is a city in Canada.” |
2. Example or Detail | Add a real example or one specific detail. | “It’s a very cosmopolitan place with people from many different ethnic backgrounds, basically from all over the world.” |
3. Result or Extra Detail | Finish with a result or one extra detail. | “And that kind of diversity is something I really appreciate.” |
That gives you about three sentences, or roughly 20 seconds of speaking, which is about right for Part 1. You can watch this answer, and the band 9 answers to the other Practice 1 questions, in the video sample answers above. Speak naturally, use contractions such as “I’m” and “it’s”, and vary how you start your answers instead of repeating the question word for word.
Sometimes, you know what you want to say, but you need a little more time to organize your next idea. Instead of stopping completely, use controlled fillers to keep your speech moving naturally.
Purpose | Phrases |
|---|---|
Start / buy thinking time | Well, Actually, I’d say, I suppose |
Explain / clarify | What I mean by that is, In other words |
Give an example / detail | For example, More specifically |
Add another idea | On top of that, Also |
Show contrast | That said, Having said that |
Show result / consequence | As a result, Because of that |
Finish / summarize | So overall, That’s why |
The goal is not to use these phrases in every sentence. Use them when you need to avoid a long pause, organize your next idea, or keep your answer moving.
Across 41,256 Part 1 recordings by our learners, the average answer lasted 29.9 seconds and contained 50 words, at about 92 correctly spoken words per minute. In our speech scoring, grammar was the lowest criterion most often, in 71% of Part 1 answers. The Answer + Reason → Example or Detail → Result or Extra Detail pattern above is a quick way to reach a full answer without rushing.

When you’re ready for the full test, try a complete IELTS practice test with all three Speaking parts.
Every IELTS Speaking Part 1 practice in our question bank is listed below, with its topic and first question. Open any set to answer the questions out loud and get an instant AI score.
Part 1 lasts about 4 to 5 minutes. The examiner introduces themselves, checks your identity, and asks questions about you and two or three familiar topics.
Aim for about 20 seconds, usually three sentences: a direct answer with a reason, an example or detail, and a result or extra detail. One-word answers are too short, and long speeches leave less time for other questions.
Part 1 usually starts with your work or studies, your hometown, or your home, then moves to everyday topics such as free time, food, music, technology, travel, and the weather.
Prepare ideas and vocabulary for common topics, but don't memorize full answers. Examiners notice rehearsed answers, and the exact question you get may be different.
No. Your Speaking band comes from the whole test, using the same four criteria: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation.
