    (Section 1: You will hear a conversation between a librarian and a female student. First, you will have some time to look at questions 1 to 10. [20 seconds]. Now, listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 10.)

    L=Laura

    M=Max

    L: Hello, I'd like to join the library. Can you help me?

    M: Of course. Have you got time to fill in the application form now or would you prefer to fill one in online?

    L: I’ll do it now, if that’ ok.

    M: Yes, that’s fine. Just a second, I’ll go and get a copy of the form. Right. Now, there are a few questions about your person details so I'll just ask you those first and then I'll get you to sign at the bottom.

    L: Ok.

    M: Good, so what's your full name?

    L: It’s Laura Cole.

    M: Cole?

    L: Yes, that's right.

    M: OK, and what's your address?

    L: Flat 3, 38 Green Road, Wandsworth.

    M: Green Road, that's just around the corner from the library, isn't it?

    L: Yes, that’s right.

    M: OK, so the postal code is SW18 3HY, right?

    L: Yes, SW18 3HY.

    M: Mm. And your telephone number? I need both home and work.

    L: Home is 01287 304923 and work is 01289 847332. Do you need to see some ID? I’ve brought my driver’s license.

    M: Yes, good, we need your ID. What’s the license number?

    L: 2020BD. Do you need to see it?

    M: Yes, I just need to confirm it.

    L: There you go.

    M: Right, thanks. And could you tell me your date of birth please?

    L: 21st June 1997.

    M: Great. So that’s everything I need for the application form. Do you mind if I also ask you a couple of questions for a survey we’re conducting about library resource?

    L: Sure. Go ahead.

    M: Great. Thanks. What kind of books do you generally prefer? What genres? Have a look at this list.

    L: Ooh, well, I’m really into Scandinavian crime fiction at the moment. I like to read the books and then watch the adaptations on TV and see how they compare. Fantasy – I’m not that keen to be honest. My partner enjoys that kind of thing but I prefer something scary myself, horror is more my thing. Not biographies though. I find them so boring.

    M: Anything else?

    L: Mmm, I'm completely taken by travel books – novels and also travel guides. I like to read them and plan trips in my mind even though I don’t have real plans to go on them.

    M: Hmm, interesting. Well, that’s all from me. Thanks for taking part in the survey. I just need you to sign here on the line. Here's a pen. Oh, and I nearly forgot, the membership fee. It’s $25 and $20 is refundable if you leave the library before one year of membership is over.

    L: Right, ok. I’ll pay by card for that. And do I sign here?

    M: Yes, just there. You can borrow up to 3 books now, if you like, but your card won't be ready until next week. We’ll send it to you by post.

    L: Great. Well, I'll have a look around then.

    M: Fine.
