An IELTS band score calculator turns your practice test results into IELTS bands. Enter how many Listening and Reading questions you answered correctly, add your Writing and Speaking bands, and the calculator below shows each section band and your overall band, using the same conversion tables as our IELTS band scores guide.
The result is an estimate. Official IELTS conversions can change slightly from test to test, and only IELTS can issue your real band score. But it is a quick way to see where you stand and which section to work on next.

Listening and Reading each have 40 questions, and every correct answer is worth one mark. Your number of correct answers, called your raw score, is converted to a band from 1 to 9. Listening uses one table for everyone. Reading uses different tables for Academic and General Training, because General Training texts are easier and need more correct answers for the same band.
Band | Listening | Academic Reading | General Training Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
9 | 39–40 | 39–40 | 40 |
8 | 35–36 | 35–36 | 37–38 |
7 | 30–31 | 30–32 | 34–35 |
6 | 23–25 | 23–26 | 30–31 |
5 | 16–17 | 15–18 | 23–26 |
This shows the whole bands only. For every half band, see the full tables in our IELTS band scores guide.
Writing and Speaking have no raw score. Examiners give a band from 0 to 9 on four criteria, and your section band comes from those four scores. In Writing, Task 2 counts for twice as much as Task 1. To estimate these bands at home, you need a scored practice answer, which is why the calculator asks for the band rather than a number of correct answers.
Your overall band is the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band:
Imagine you take an Academic practice test and get these results:
Section | Your result | Band |
|---|---|---|
Listening | 31 correct answers | 7.0 |
Academic Reading | 28 correct answers | 6.5 |
Writing | Scored band | 6.0 |
Speaking | Scored band | 6.5 |
The four bands add up to 7.0 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 6.5 = 26. Divided by four, that’s an average of 6.5, so your overall band is 6.5. If your Writing were 6.5 instead, the average would be 6.625, which still rounds to 6.5. To reach an overall 7.0, you would need an average of at least 6.75, for example by raising Writing and Speaking to 7.0.
Band | Skill level | CEFR level |
|---|---|---|
9 | Expert user | C2 |
8.5 | Very good user | C2 |
7–8 | Good to very good user | C1 |
5.5–6.5 | Modest to competent user | B2 |
4–5 | Limited to modest user | B1 |
1–3.5 | Non-user to extremely limited user | Below B1 |
Most universities ask for an overall band between 6.0 and 7.0, often with a minimum in each section. Check the exact requirement of every program you apply to.
For comparison, here are the bands our learners reach in full practice test sections, from 61,104 Listening and 43,123 Reading sections, plus scored Writing and Speaking sections:
Section | Average band | Median band | Band 6 or higher | Band 7 or higher |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Listening | 5.6 | 5.5 | 41% | 12% |
Reading | 5.4 | 5.5 | 36% | 14% |
Writing | 5.7 | 6.0 | 51% | 18% |
Speaking | 6.3 | 6.5 | 67% | 39% |
If one of your bands is well below the others, that section usually offers the quickest gain in your overall band.
A calculator is only as good as the scores you put in. Here’s how to get realistic numbers:
Your overall band is the average of your Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking bands, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to .5, and an average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.
In our conversion table, 30 to 31 correct answers out of 40 give band 7 in Listening. The exact number can vary slightly from test to test.
It gives a reliable estimate for Listening and Reading, because those bands come from your number of correct answers. Writing and Speaking bands come from examiners, so for those you need an estimate from a scored practice answer.
The General Training Reading test uses different texts, so it needs more correct answers for the same band. For example, band 6 needs about 23 correct answers in Academic Reading but about 30 in General Training.
Write an essay or record an answer in a practice test, then use its score. Our practice tests give an instant AI band for every Writing and Speaking answer, and you can ask a certified teacher for a review.
