Adaptive TOEFL practice: free practice tests with two-stage Reading and Listening

Adaptive TOEFL Practice: Free Adaptive Practice Tests for the 2026 TOEFL, How to Use Them to Raise Your Band, & Helpful Insights from 3 685 407 Adaptive Practice Answers by our Students

Welcome to our free adaptive TOEFL practice guide, where you can take a full-length adaptive TOEFL practice test, or just the Reading or Listening section, with the same two stages and timers as the official TOEFL iBT. You’ll also learn how to turn each practice test into a plan for the next week, with helpful insights from 3 685 407 adaptive practice answers by our students.

Since January 2026, the TOEFL Reading and Listening sections adapt to your level, so a practice test with fixed questions can’t show you what test day feels like. Ours can: do well in stage 1, and you face the same harder stage 2 you’ll meet on the real test.

If you’re looking for a free adaptive TOEFL practice test, then click the button below to take a full-length test with both adaptive stages and a band score for every section.

Why Your TOEFL Practice Should Be Adaptive

In the real TOEFL, Reading and Listening each have two stages. Your result in stage 1 decides whether stage 2 is harder or easier. A practice test with a fixed set of questions can’t show you that switch, and it can’t give you a band that reflects which stage 2 you reached. Adaptive practice can:

  • It shows you the real difficulty. If you do well in stage 1, you practice the harder stage 2 you’ll face on test day.
  • It trains the real pacing. Reading has one timer for both stages, and each Listening question has its own 20- or 30-second timer.
  • It gives you a realistic band. Your practice score takes the stage into account, as the real test does, instead of counting correct answers.

For how the two stages work and how they affect your official score, see our TOEFL adaptive test guide.

What’s in an Adaptive TOEFL Practice Test

Each full-length practice test matches the official test in its sections, tasks, and time limits:

Section

Format in our practice tests

Score

Reading

Adaptive, two stages: Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage. One timer for the section, about 30 minutes.

Band 1–6, with your result by question type

Listening

Adaptive, two stages: Choose a Response, Conversations, Announcements, and Academic Talks. Each recording plays once; each question has its own timer.

Band 1–6, with your result by question type

Writing

Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Academic Discussion, about 23 minutes.

Band 1–6, with AI scores for the email and the post

Speaking

Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview, about 8 minutes.

Band 1–6, with AI scores for every recording

Every test ends with a score report: a band for each section and overall, your correct rate by question type, and the criteria that held back your Writing and Speaking. For what each band means, see our TOEFL band score guide.

How to Read Your Adaptive Score Report

The score report is where an adaptive practice test turns into a study plan. It opens with your overall band out of 6, then has one tab for each section. Here’s what to look at in each part, and what to do with it:

Part of the report

What it shows

What to do with it

Overall

Your overall band and the band for each section

Find your weakest section against your target band. That’s where your next week of practice goes.

Question list (Reading, Listening)

Every question with its task, question type, response time, and whether you got it right

Filter to incorrect answers. Try each one again before you open the explanation, then read why the right answer is right.

Question type analysis

How you did on each question type

Pick the two or three weakest types. Those are your AI Tutor exercises and practice questions for the week.

Time analysis

Your time management, time pressure, and review and edit habits

Check whether you ran out of time or rushed. In Reading, one timer covers both stages, so pacing problems cost you in both.

Writing and Speaking reviews

The AI score for each criterion of your email, discussion post, and recordings

Note the lowest criterion, such as grammar or support, and practice that skill before your next test.

How to Use Adaptive TOEFL Practice

A practice test only helps if you learn from it. This cycle turns each adaptive test into a plan for the next week:

  1. Take a full test under real conditions. All four sections in one sitting, with no pauses, because the real test has no scheduled break.
  2. Read your score report by question type. Note your band in each section, then the two or three question types with the lowest correct rate.
  3. Practice those types for 5 to 7 days. Use single practice questions and lessons for the weak types, not more full tests.
  4. Retest one section if it’s your weakest. A single adaptive Reading or Listening section shows whether you now reach the harder stage 2.
  5. Take the next full test. Compare bands with the last report, then repeat the cycle.

Two habits matter in every adaptive test. Be accurate in stage 1, because it decides your stage 2. And don’t panic if stage 2 feels hard: that usually means stage 1 went well.

Between Tests: Practice Questions and AI Tutor

The days between adaptive tests are where your band actually moves. Use them for two kinds of practice, both aimed at the weak spots your score report showed.

Practice Questions for Every Task

Our question bank has practice sets for every task in the 2026 test, each with answers and explanations. Single questions let you slow down, check your reasoning, and repeat a task until it feels routine. Start with the first free set of the task your report flagged:

AI Tutor Skill Exercises

Answering more questions doesn’t always fix a mistake you keep making. AI Tutor teaches the skill behind it instead: for a missed listening detail, for example, it shows you how to catch what a speaker says about a topic, step by step, then gives you a new question to try. The cycle is simple: find the mistake in your report, train the skill with AI Tutor, then prove it on a new question.

Writing and Speaking Feedback Between Tests

Writing and Speaking aren’t adaptive, but they’re half your overall band, and they’re the sections where self-study is hardest because you can’t mark your own answer. Every email, discussion post, and recording in our practice gets an instant AI score on each criterion. When you want more, a detailed AI review or a review by a certified teacher shows exactly which sentences or sounds cost you points.

In our data, 91% of our learners who used Speaking reviews raised their Speaking band, by 2.2 on average, and 93% of those who used Writing reviews raised their Writing band, by 2.6 on average.

Between adaptive tests, write one email and one discussion post and record one interview set, then fix the lowest criterion before your next full test. See how reviews work in our TOEFL writing review and TOEFL speaking review guides.
