What Is the TOEFL 2026 Redesign?

The redesign is a new version of the TOEFL iBT that every test taker has taken since January 21, 2026. It keeps the four sections, Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking, but rebuilds what happens inside them:

Why ETS Redesigned the TOEFL

ETS described the redesign as a way to modernize the test experience, improve fairness, and better match the English that today’s students use. In practice, the redesign does five things:

  1. It tests real-world English, not only academic English. Students at an English-speaking university write emails, read notices, follow announcements, and talk with staff, not only read textbooks. Tasks like Read in Daily Life, Write an Email, and Listen to an Announcement test that everyday English directly.
  2. It measures more accurately in less time. An adaptive test spends its questions near your level, so it needs fewer of them to place you. That’s a big part of how the test dropped to about 90 minutes.
  3. It makes scores easier to read. A band from 1 to 6 that matches the CEFR levels is easier for students and universities to understand than a number out of 120.
  4. It reduces cultural bias. ETS revised the content to focus on academic authenticity and cultural neutrality, so students from every background have a fair chance.
  5. It improves the test day. Scores within 72 hours, better test-center audio, new official preparation resources, and a redesigned registration process came with the new format.

TOEFL Redesign Timeline

The 2026 redesign is the second big change to the TOEFL iBT in less than three years.

Date

What changed

July 2023

The TOEFL iBT was shortened to under 2 hours. Reading went down to two passages, unscored questions were removed, and Write for an Academic Discussion replaced the Independent Writing task.

January 21, 2026

The redesigned TOEFL iBT launched: new tasks in every section, adaptive Reading and Listening, about 90 minutes of testing time, and the 1–6 band score.

2026 to 2028

A two-year transition: score reports also show a comparable score on the old 0–120 scale, for universities that haven’t updated their requirements yet.

Old TOEFL Tasks and What Replaced Them

If you know the old TOEFL, the quickest way to understand the redesign is task by task. The table shows what each section asked before January 2026 and what replaced it. Every new task links to a free practice question in our bank, so you can try it in the redesigned format right away.

Section

Before 2026

Since January 2026 (free practice)

Reading

Two long academic passages, each with 10 questions

Listening

Campus conversations and long academic lectures, with notes

Writing

Integrated Writing (summarize a reading and a lecture) and Academic Discussion

Speaking

One independent task and three integrated tasks (read, listen, then speak)

For a sample question of every new task, with answers and tips, see our TOEFL 2026 changes guide.

What the Redesign Tests Now

The redesign doesn’t only change the tasks. It changes which skills earn points. Four skills matter more than before:

Redesigned TOEFL Reading test screen: the new Complete the Words task

  • Grammar and spelling at the word level. Complete the Words and Build a Sentence are scored right or wrong, so one wrong letter or one misplaced word costs the whole item.
  • Listening memory and pronunciation. Listen and Repeat asks you to say back sentences exactly, with no notes, and each recording in Listening plays only once.
  • Speaking without preparation. The Interview gives you no preparation time, so fluency and a ready answer structure count more than planned notes.
  • Practical writing. The email task scores tone and completeness: did you cover every point, in language that fits the reader?

Long-passage reading stamina and note-taking through long lectures matter less, because the passages and talks are much shorter. Older study books that train those skills now cover only a small part of the test.

How Our Learners’ Results Changed with the Redesign

Many of the Reading and Listening question types, such as detail, inference, and vocabulary, appear in both the old and the redesigned test. We compared how often our learners answered each one correctly in the previous format and in the current format. Of the 13 question types in both formats, 5 became harder for our learners and 8 became easier. The biggest drop was listening: gist purpose, from 91.4% to 71.4% correct. The biggest gain was listening: connecting content, from 39.8% to 70.8%.

The lesson: even question types you know from the old test behave differently in the redesigned one, because the texts are shorter, the timers are different, and the difficulty adapts. Practice them in the new format, not from old materials.

Old vs. Redesigned Questions: How Our Learners Score

Our question bank has practice sets in both formats, so we can compare them directly. On old-format Reading passages, our learners averaged 63.1% across 135.906 attempts. On the new Reading tasks, they average 77.1%. In Listening, old-format conversation and lecture sets averaged 66.5% across 151.899 attempts, and the new Listening tasks average 78.3%. All of these are single practice questions, not timed tests, so the comparison is like for like.

Bar chart of the average score BestMyTest learners got on old-format TOEFL Reading passages and Listening sets, and on each redesigned 2026 Reading and Listening task, in practice questions

In Reading, 3 of the 3 new tasks score higher than the old passages did. In Listening, 4 of the 4 new tasks score higher than the old sets. So a score you got on older practice material doesn’t tell you how you’ll do on each new task. What matters is which new task is lowest for you, and one full adaptive test shows that in its score report.

What the Redesign Means for You

  • If you test after January 21, 2026, you take the redesigned test. There is no option to take the older version.
  • If you took the TOEFL before the redesign, your scores stay valid for two years from your test date, and universities can compare them with the new bands using ETS’s comparison chart.
  • If your university still lists requirements out of 120, use the comparable 0–120 score on your report during the transition, or the TOEFL score conversion chart, and ask the admissions office when in doubt.
  • If you studied with older materials, keep the vocabulary and grammar you learned, but switch your practice to the new tasks. The old integrated tasks and long lectures no longer appear.

What You Can Keep from Older TOEFL Materials

Not everything you studied for the old TOEFL is wasted. The English skills carry over; the task practice mostly doesn’t. Use this table to sort your older books and notes:

From older materials

Keep or replace?

What to practice now

Vocabulary lists and word study

Keep

Use the words in Complete the Words and in your emails, where spelling and word form count.

Grammar study

Keep

Apply it to Build a Sentence, where one misplaced word costs the whole item.

Academic reading practice

Keep, but shorter

Practice short academic passages with about 5 questions, inside one section timer.

Academic Discussion practice

Keep

The same task, still 10 minutes. See the Academic Discussion guide.

Integrated Writing (reading plus lecture)

Replace

Write an Email and Build a Sentence.

Independent and integrated speaking tasks

Replace

Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview: no reading, no notes, no preparation time.

Long lectures and note-taking drills

Replace

Short academic talks, announcements, and one-line responses. Each recording plays once.

Practice tests with fixed questions

Replace

Practice tests with adaptive Reading and Listening, so you see the harder or easier second stage.

How to Adapt Your Preparation to the Redesigned TOEFL

Preparing for the redesigned TOEFL with a practice test

  1. Take an adaptive practice test first. It gives you a band baseline in each section and shows you the new tasks under the real timers. Our adaptive TOEFL practice guide explains how to use it.
  2. Learn each new task once, properly. Each task has its own method and time budget. Our task guides cover them one by one: Complete the Words, Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Academic Discussion, Listen and Repeat, and Take an Interview.
  3. Train the skills the redesign rewards. Spelling and word endings, sentence order, repeating sentences aloud, and speaking without preparation all improve fast with short daily practice.
  4. Get your writing and speaking scored. Feedback on the email, the discussion post, and your recordings shows exactly which criterion holds back your band.
  5. Retest in the adaptive format. Every 1 to 2 weeks, take another full adaptive test to measure progress and plan your next week. Our TOEFL study plan sets out a schedule.

How BestMyTest Was Rebuilt for the Redesign

When ETS redesigned the TOEFL, we rebuilt our preparation around the new test. All our lessons, practice questions, and simulation tests follow the 2026 format, so nothing you practice here belongs to the old test:

  • Practice questions for every new task. From Complete the Words to Take an Interview, each task has its own bank of practice sets with answers. The table of old and new tasks above links to the first free set of each one.
  • 50 full-length adaptive tests. Every test has the two-stage Reading and Listening sections, the real timers, and a score report with a band for each section. See all of them in our TOEFL practice test guide.
  • AI scores for Writing and Speaking. Every email, discussion post, and recording gets an instant AI score on each criterion, with a detailed AI or teacher review when you want more. See our writing review and speaking review.
  • AI Tutor skill exercises. When you miss a question, AI Tutor teaches the skill behind it step by step, instead of only showing the answer.
  • More than 200 lessons on the new tasks and the English skills they test.

TOEFL Redesign: Frequently Asked Questions

Why did ETS redesign the TOEFL?

To modernize the test, improve fairness, and better match the English students use today. The redesign adds real-world tasks, makes Reading and Listening adaptive, shortens the test to about 90 minutes, and reports scores on a 1–6 band scale aligned with CEFR.

When did the TOEFL redesign take effect?

On January 21, 2026. Every TOEFL iBT taken since then uses the redesigned format.

Are TOEFL scores from before the redesign still valid?

Yes. TOEFL scores stay valid for two years from the test date, and ETS publishes a chart that compares old 0–120 scores with the new 1–6 bands.

Is the redesigned TOEFL harder?

It is shorter, and its tasks are closer to everyday and university English, but it rewards different skills: accurate grammar and spelling, listening memory, and speaking without preparation. So practice the new tasks rather than relying on older materials.

Can I still use old TOEFL books?

Partly. Their vocabulary, grammar, and academic reading practice still help, but their integrated writing and speaking tasks, long lectures, and fixed-question practice tests no longer match the test. Practice the new tasks in the new format.

Is the Academic Discussion task the same as before?

Yes. It is the one task kept from the previous TOEFL: you read a professor’s question and two student posts, then write your own post in 10 minutes. It now comes after Build a Sentence and Write an Email.
