What Is the TOEFL Listen and Repeat Task?

In the TOEFL Listen and Repeat task, you hear 7 sentences, one at a time, and say each one back exactly as you heard it. The sentences share one situation, such as a trainer showing you how to use a machine or a guide giving a tour, and a picture on the screen sets the scene. Each sentence plays only once, and there is no preparation time.

The sentences start short and get longer, so the last ones test how much you can hold in memory. The task measures your pronunciation, rhythm, and listening accuracy. Listen and Repeat is questions 1 to 7 of the Speaking section. Questions 8 to 11 are the Take an Interview task.

Listen to how the sentences grow. “Insert a coffee filter into the holder.” has seven words, but “Clean the coffee maker at least monthly for the best results.” has eleven. In the longer ones, small words like the, at, and for are easy to drop, and each dropped word costs points.

How Listen and Repeat Is Scored

Each of the 7 sentences gets a score from 0 to 5, based on two things: how much of the sentence you repeat and how clearly you say it.

  • 5: you repeat the sentence exactly and every word is clear.
  • 4: you keep the meaning with a small change of word or grammar.
  • 3: you say a full sentence, but the meaning is not the original one.
  • 2: a large part of the sentence is missing or wrong.
  • 1: only a few words; most of the sentence is missing.
  • 0: no answer, or nothing understandable.

Your seven Listen and Repeat scores and your four Interview scores together make your Speaking band from 1 to 6. You don’t need a native accent for a 5. You need every word, in order, said clearly enough to understand. The full rubric for both Speaking tasks is on our TOEFL speaking rubric page.

TOEFL Listen and Repeat Tips

These six tips come from our speaking lessons. Each one targets a way learners lose points on this task.

AI Tutor phoneme pronunciation exercise for TOEFL Listen and Repeat practice

  • Listen to the whole sentence first. Don’t start repeating in your head while the speaker is still talking. Hear the full sentence, then speak.
  • Remember meaning, not sounds. A sentence you understand is easier to hold than a string of sounds. Picture the action: “fill the water chamber,” “insert the filter.”
  • Repeat in word groups. Say “Begin by filling / the water chamber / with clean water,” not one word at a time. Groups keep the natural rhythm the raters listen for.
  • Copy the speaker’s stress and intonation. Keep the stressed syllables long and the small words short, the way the speaker said them.
  • Say every ending. -s, -ed, and -ing carry grammar. “Places” for “placed” changes the sentence and lowers the score.
  • Keep going if you lose a word. Say the rest of the sentence clearly. A sentence with one missing word still scores far higher than one you stop halfway.

To practice, shadow short audio every day: play a sentence, pause, repeat it, and compare. Start with sentences of 6 to 8 words and work up to 12 or more.
