In an Opinion question type, you will be given a question which contains an opinion. Your task is to write an essay in response to the opinion. This type of question often asks if you agree or disagree with an opinion. Let's look at an example of this.
The drastic increase in cases of obesity is putting a strain on the health care system. Some healthcare workers believe that introducing more physical education lessons in schools is the best way to solve this epidemic. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Now let's look at how to structure your essay for an Opinion question.
IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay Structure - Opinion
There is one main, fool-proof way to outline this type of essay, and we suggest that you follow this without straying from the procedure. This is the best way to map out your ideas for the Opinion Essay:

Introduction - In general, you will need 2-3 sentences for this paragraph. Since this is the first paragraph of your essay, you should paraphrase the questions that were given to you. Some people believe that the death penalty can benefit a nation. I completely agree with this opinion, as the death penalty can positively impact a country through lowering both crime and tax rates. (33 words)

Establishing the death penalty could effectively decrease crime rates in society. The most compelling reason for the death penalty's positive contribution to society, is that it is an effective deterrent to serious crime. For example, people who are thinking of murder or committing violent acts will think twice before doing so, and dangerous criminals who have undergone the death penalty would never be able to reoffend. As a result of this policy, crime rate would go down. (77 words)
Paragraph 2:
Additionally, the death penalty could lower taxes for citizens. With this policy, the government would be able to spend less money on keeping the criminal in prison. If the criminal is jailed for many years or for life, the government would need to pay for the enormous expenses involved such as the cost of food for the prisoners and the salaries for the prison officers. However, with the death sentence, the prisoner will spend less time in prison and this would reduce the cost of imprisonment substantially. (87 words)
Conclusion:
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly agree with the opinion that sentencing serious criminals to death is beneficial for countries. This is because of its deterrent effect, its ability to save the government a lot of money and the fact that we can keep dangerous criminals out of society forever. Given this situation, it is recommended that governments around the world should think about implementing this form of punishment. (67 words)

This type is easy to confuse with two others:
- A Discussion question gives you two opposing views to discuss. Here, there is only one trend, and you decide whether it is good or bad.
- An Advantages and Disadvantages question usually asks whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Here, you must give an overall judgement of the development itself.
You can consider both sides, but the examiner expects a clear position: mainly positive, mainly negative, or (less often) completely one or the other.
IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay Structure - Positive or Negative Development

However, these advantages are outweighed by the damage to the quality of information. Anyone can publish a story online, and false or exaggerated reports often spread faster than corrections. How to Identify IELTS Writing Advantage & Disadvantage Question Types
Whenever you see a question that asks you to discuss the positive and negative aspects of a situation and give your opinion regarding the matter, you know you're dealing with a Advantage & Disadvantage question type. Let's look at an example of this.
As a result of tourism and globalization, English has become the most widely spoken language in the world. Some people think this will lead to English becoming the only “global language”. What are the advantages and disadvantages to having one global language? Do you believe that it could have a positive or negative effect on society?
As you can see, this question is asking you to describe the advantages and disadvantags to having one global language and your opinion on whether it could have a positve or negative effect on society. So, it is is a Advantage & Disadvantage question type.

There are three main essay structures for this question type. In order to fully understand the various question types, we will look at examples of each along with the specific outline:
Question 1: In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decided to do this.
Simple structure (Outline A):
In this case, the question asks you to simply discuss both advantages and disadvantages; that’s all you have to describe in this case. You do not need to discuss your opinion. This is the most simple question for the Advantages and Disadvantages question type, and you will need to use a simple structure. Let’s call this Outline A. It looks like this:
- Introduction
- Advantages (1&2)
- Disadvantages (1&2)
- Conclusion
Question 2: In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for young people who decide to do this?
Opinion Version (Outline B):
While the question is similar to Question 1, you would need to take a different approach. This question is not asking you to simply list off the advantages and disadvantages, nor is it asking you to say whether there are more advantages. This question is asking you whether or not the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore, you will need to discuss your opinion and write about the importance (or unimportance) of the advantages.
First off, you will need to decide which side is stronger for you to write about. In other words, you will need to decide if it is easier for you to write about how the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, or vice versa. This is where your own opinions come into play and depend on the topic. In this case, if you are more comfortable writing about how the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, stick with that, even if you personally do not agree with the topic.
After you decide, this the structure you would need to use:
- Introduction
- Stronger Side
- Weaker Side
- Conclusion
Question 3: Many young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your own opinion.
Discussion Opinion (Outline C):
This third question is a combination of Question 1 and Question 2, as it requiresyou to discuss the advantages and disadvantages while also giving your opinion. Keep in mind that your paragraphs may need to be a bit shorter than usual, since you have to add three different main paragraphs in your essay. In this case, you would want to combine both outlines for the following:
- Introduction
- Advantages (1&2)
- Disadvantages (1&2)
- Opinion
- Conclusion

We will use Outline B from the previous section, as it tends to be the most unique and most common question type of the Advantages and Disadvantages type essay.
Introduction – In general, you will need two sentences for this paragraph. Since this is the first paragraph of your essay, you should paraphrase the question that was given to you. In other words, rewrite the question in your own words using synonyms. The second sentence will introduce the specific topics that you plan to discuss in your main body paragraphs. Therefore, your introduction paragraph should look like:

- Thesis Statement – This will be your opinion – state which outweighs the other.
Stronger Side – This paragraph should be about 4-5 sentences long. In this paragraph, you will describe why a specific side is stronger by using explanations, details, or examples. Since this is your main argument, it will be longer than the following paragraph (Weaker Side), because you are using two examples. The paragraph should look like this:
- Topic Sentence – This will introduce the stronger side.
- First Explanation of Stronger Side
- Example of Stronger Side
- Second Explanation of Stronger Side
- Example of Stronger Side
Weaker Side - This paragraph should be about 4-5 sentences long. In this paragraph, you will describe why this side is weaker with explanations, details, or examples. This paragraph is shorter than the preceding paragraph (Stronger Side) because it is not your main argument, and you will only use one example for the explanation. The paragraph should look like this:
- Topic Sentence – This will introduce the weaker side.
- Explanation of Weaker Side
- Example of Weaker Side
Conclusion – This paragraph will wrap everything up, and it is not the time to add any new information into your essay. This paragraph should be around 3-4 sentences, and include the following information:

Traditionally, children have begun studying foreign languages at later stages in their educational careers, but some believe that it could be beneficial to introduce them earlier. Paragraph 1:
Young children are better able to learn languages for a variety of factors. First off, studies show that young children pick up languages better than teenagers. The younger brains are, the more they are able to retain information in the long-term. It has also been proven that young brains absorb material at a faster rate. Additionally, implementing language lessons in primary schools would allow for more flexibility within the school system. Younger children will be able to engage with the material more frequently through shorter sessions, thus maintaining their enthusiasm and progress. (92 words)
Paragraph 2:
However, there are some disadvantages when it comes to learning languages at an earlier age. Primary teachers may not be qualified to provide lessons in foreign languages, resulting in inadequate teaching. This could demotivate younger students and give them a negative experience in language learning. Further, school districts may not be able to carry on foreign language teaching from primary to middle schools. In this case, students would not only lose their progress, but they would also be demotivated due to the lack of consistency throughout their educational careers. However, these issues can be effectively addressed through consistent support in the school district, and pose only a minor threat to the advantages. (112 words)
Conclusion:
Although there are a few disadvantages regarding the study of a foreign language during primary school, there are a plethora of advantages that outweigh the negative aspects. Young children’s innate abilities should be appreciated and fostered to their full advantage. (40 words)

There are three types of outlines that are frequently used for Problem and Solution essays.
Outlines A and C can both be used for questions that involve more than one problem and more than one solution. Sometimes, however, Outline B is the only option if the question presents two different types of solutions to one problem (we will examine this below).

Let's look at some examples of question types that call for these different outlines.
Question 1: What problems do children face in the age of social media? What should be done to address or solve these various concerns?
Question 2: Traffic congestion is becoming a major problem for global cities. Analyze and present some measures that could be taken to reduce traffic in these cities.
Question 3: Explain some of the ways in which humans are damaging the environment. What can governments do to address these problems? What can individual people do?
To conclude, it is rare for a question to feature many different problems while asking for only one solution. Therefore, it is best to prepare for questions that will feature one problem and ask for various solutions.
Unless the question states otherwise, you will most likely want to include two problems and two solutions. Why? Using just one problem and solution is most likely not going to be substantial enough for 250 words, and using more than two would be superfluous. Additionally, it is extremely important that each problem has its own solution. In other words, if you mention two problems, be sure to mention two solutions to those problems.
Now, let's take a closer look at how to plan each paragraph.
We will use Outline C from the previous section, as it tends to be the most complicated and most common question type of the Problem and Solution type essay. Below, we will detail how each paragraph should be written.

I just recently took my TOEFL test and managed to score 114/120 thanks to this course! :) Reading 30 / Listening 30 / Speaking 24 / Writing 30 The course especially helps getting into the "exam mode" and to get accustomed to the type of questions that aren't your everyday type of task (--> especially the speaking part). While I didn't do a lot of the learning modules, some of them really helped me to work on specific issues I had (e.g. a certain type of question in the reading part that I always messed up). Based on your right/wrong results, BestMyTest suggests you modules that may help to improve in that certain aspect. I primarily focused on these lectures + structure lectures for writing/speaking as well as practice to minimize the amount of time spent learning (I'd say I invested about 50h max preparing for the TOEFL). However, I found the grading done by BestMyTest tutors to be a little more strict than the actual results (at least that's what I believe as I never scored as high as I did in my actual exam). That's not a bad thing though as it motivates you to push even harder. Last, but not least ;) ... BestMyTest has great customer support. I reached out with an issue and they got back to me within under 24h + were able to help out. Twice. It's rare to have such great customer service nowadays :) Overall, I'd recommend everyone to get the course as it's really worth the money

This is by far the best website I used to prepare for the toefl. The speaking and the writing reviews helped me focus on my weaknesses. I ended up scoring 28/30 S and 29/30 W. I struggled while I was trying to find someone to accurately evaluate my speaking and writings. My little suggestion is that speaking reviews seem to be very expensive :( And with a 1-month plan which does not cost a little, you only get 1 whole speaking task review, anyway I won't cut off stars, as this course absolutely helped me to improve my score significantly.
I think this website is one of the best to prepare for the TOEFL exam. It offers lessons, vocabulary, and tips/tricks for each section, a wide range of well-made tests (which imitate exactly how the exam goes) and it is also up to date. The price is very affordable and you can benefit from their free trial period as well. Another important thing to keep in mind is that the samples they offer (for speaking and writing) are almost perfect, professional. But normally nobody can provide such an accurate answer, so no need to worry. They are only for guidance. You can obtain a really good score with more natural responses (which can include pauses, stuttering or less fancy words).

After trying a different course, I can say that Best my test course is very professional and recommended. They have very good lessons and multiple ways to practice and strength both foundations and skills. Their practice tests are very similar to the actual TOFEL test and reflecting the real test level. I just got my Toefl score yesterday- 114/120, and I owe a massive part of that achievement to Bestmytest. The reason I went for Bestmytest is for access to experts to provide feedback on the speaking and writing areas in particular as I felt that self study won't enable me to see my mistakes. I got 30/30 in both these sections! Below are the benefits I experienced: 1. The home screen provides information on my progress: what my current score is and what I require, what percentage of each section I have completed and which question types, reading in particular, I am struggling with. I found the gist content and insert sentences questions to be particularly challenging so I sought further expert help in those areas. 2. For the few IT related queries I needed help with, Jane was really helpful and swiftly guided me. Overall, the program is sophisticated and user friendly. 3. The experts who reviewed my submissions gave really constructive feedback. The response was speedy too. I personally found their bank of questions to be harder, and the scores of submitted work to be non-lenient, which challenged me to work harder. 4. Practice makes perfect. Bestmytest have a universe of questions which was exactly what I needed. 5. They have helpful videos and templates on how to approach questions too. I am glad that I supplemented my revision with this excellent learning program. I would highly recommend it! I'm a very anxious exam taker and Bestmytest helped me build within myself, that confidence, which guided me to success.
Their 20 tests are almost identical to the actual TOEFL test. The writing and speaking feedback is very helpful as well. I spent two weeks using the website and I improved from 93 to 105. From a guy who spent nine months fighting against the toefl test, I can tell that there is no platform better than Bestmytest to prepare for the toefl test.
I prepared for 12 days(approximately 30hrs) on bestmytest and got 113/120 on TOEFL. I'm extremely happy that I got this score and I would say that bestmytest helped me a lot! I experienced the following advantages preparing from bestmytest: 1- Excellent speaking and writing reviews(I got the exact same score on speaking-29 and almost the same score on writing-28 on the actual TOEFL exam) 2- Excellent high level practice questions: I felt that the practice questions on bestmytest reading and listening section were of a higher level than tested on the actual TOEFL exam. But, that was a big plus, as I felt at ease during the TOEFL exam. 3- Excellent sample essays and speaking sample answers. One must go through 50% of these to get well prepared! 4- Excellent structure explained in videos for speaking and writing section. Make sure you go thorough all the videos on TOEFL guides for speaking and writing section, given on best my test. I followed the exact same structure for responses on speaking and writing section, and got 29 in speaking and 28 in writing. 5- Excellent questions and software for speaking and writing section. In fact, for all the sections :) The good thing is that you can record your responses on the speaking section and check for the errors. First of all, I am greatly appreciated to Bestmytest team! You guys are the best of the best in terms of the Toefl tutoring. I have struggled to get my required score for looong time. I finally got Improved my score from 77 to 90 with each section of R20, L24, W24, S22 for only 3 weeks of intense study. I have taken TOEFL for 3 times before, and never passed 80 each time. My first trial was 72 and 77, last one was 75. I was about to give up my studying and felt exhausted. I have studied by myself with official TOEFL books and youtube videos or other free resources whole this time. Out of four section, my listening and reading skills were the worst than other two, and I have tried many times, still, couldn’t improve them significantly. I think entire this time, I was just waisting my time and doing it wrong way over and over again. So I realized that I need tutoring but I couldnt afford personal tutoring, and I searched internet hoping that I would find some solution. Eventually, I found you guys very practical and affordable, and decided to give a shot after 7 weeks of free trial. It was the best decision of my life. I think everything on the website is super useful and handy. A big thanks to BestMyTest. It played a major role in improving my skills in English. Especially in speaking, there were lots of practice questions and tests which is in the same kind of TOEFL speaking questions. It helped me to get familiar with the pattern. After practicing those questions I was able to face all the speaking questions without any anxiety. I felt vocabulary exercises and academic videos are useful because no other websites have this clarity in teaching academic words that are mostly used by ETS TOEFL exams. I found those vocabulary sessions are interesting since it has pictures and definitions with the word that you can easily relate the word with real-world situations. After going through these sessions, I was able to understand reading and listening sections easily. You can find plenty of resources for TOEFL online, but it is tough to find efficient TOEFL resources like BestMyTest. I am glad that I found them before taking my TOEFL exam.

I strongly recommend bestmytest TOEFL preparation program. I scored 114 mainly thanks to the effective practice tests which includes very similar speaking tasks which was my main weakness.
