What Is the TOEFL Build a Sentence Task?

In the TOEFL Build a Sentence task, you see one line from a speaker and a reply with its words in the wrong order. You drag the pieces into the gaps to make a correct reply. There are 10 items, you have about 6 minutes for all of them, and each item is marked right or wrong.

Each item is one short exchange. A few words of the reply may already be in place, and the bank holds one extra piece that does not belong in the sentence. The reply can be a statement or a question. Build a Sentence opens the Writing section of the TOEFL test, before Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion, and it counts toward your Writing band from 1 to 6.

I would appreciate a little guidance because the options confuse me.

In this item the reply is a statement, and its subject "I" is already in place, so the next piece has to be a verb or an auxiliary: "would". After "would" the verb takes its base form, "appreciate". The extra piece is "does": a statement that already has "would" has no room for a second auxiliary.

What We Learned About Build a Sentence from 48,108 TOEFL Practice Tests

Build a Sentence is the hardest part of the Writing test for our learners. In 48,108 full practice tests, the average score was 3.5 out of 10. Learners who answered at least one item correctly averaged 4.2 out of 10, only 39% of them reached 5 out of 10, and only 13% reached 8 or more. Compare that with the email task, where 57% of reviewed emails reach band 4 or higher.

Figures are from the BestMyTest TOEFL learner performance data: 48,108 full practice tests on the current TOEFL format with a completed Build a Sentence task, 481,026 items, taken between 2025 and 8 October 2026. A test with no correct item usually means the learner stopped before the Writing section, so the averages are given with and without those tests. Last updated 8 October 2026.

TOEFL Build a Sentence Tips

Our learners lose most Build a Sentence points by moving pieces before they understand the exchange. These six TOEFL build a sentence tips come from the method in our Build a Sentence lesson. Each one takes a few seconds and saves a wrong answer.

  • Read what you already have. Read the first line and any words of the reply already in place. They tell you who is speaking, the time of the exchange, and whether the reply is a statement or a question.
  • Find the subject and the verb first. Every reply has one subject and one main verb. When a given word is already one of them, the gaps next to it hold the other.
  • Fit each piece to the word before it. A verb decides the form that follows it. A preposition needs a noun phrase. A word such as "that" or "because" starts a new clause with its own subject and verb.
  • Watch the question order. A question puts its auxiliary before the subject: "Could we move the meeting?" A reported question inside a statement keeps statement order and adds no "do" or "does".
  • Spot the piece that never fits. One piece in the bank is a distractor. It is usually a wrong verb form, a wrong auxiliary, a wrong pronoun, or a look-alike word in the wrong form.
  • Read it back. Read the finished reply from the start. It must answer the first line and say one clear thing.

TOEFL Build a Sentence Time Limit

The TOEFL build a sentence time limit is about 6 minutes for all 10 items, so you have about 36 seconds for each one. A clock on the screen shows the time left for the whole task, not for each item. You cannot go back to an item once you move on.

Use the first five seconds to read the exchange, not to drag pieces. Then place the subject and the verb, and fill the rest around them. If an item stalls you, make your best choice and move on, because an unfinished item at the end of the clock scores nothing.
