Composition Exercise
Fill in the gaps with the words or expressions in bold used in the model essay above.

The table gives information about the percentage of the population who are 65 years and older in three countries (the United Kingdom (UK), Canada and Hungary) in 2015, including future projections to 2030 made every five years.

Overall, the population of adults aged 65 and above in all three countries is predicted to increase between 2015 and 2030 to similar figures but at differing rates.  While the UK had the greatest percentage in 2015, Canada seems likely to have the highest by 2030.

In 2015 there were slight differences between the countries in their respective proportions of over-65s.  The United Kingdom had the highest proportion (18.1%), followed by Hungary (17.6%), and finally Canada with 16% of the population over the age of retirement.

By 2030 about 1 in 5 people in all countries are predicted to be 65 or over, although the proportions rose at different rates.  Canada is now expected to have the highest number with a rise of 6% over 15 years, while the UK and Hungary may only see an increase of around 4%.

Step 1: Analyzing question

Find the Trends: (3-4 mins)

Look for key points and trends in the data

  1. Look at the first column.  How can countries be grouped together? Are there any relationships between your groupings and the data?
  2. Look at the following yearly columns.  Which year has the highest percentage? Which has the lowest?  What are the changes between the columns?
  3. Look at each row. How does the number of elderly people as a percentage of each country’s population change over time?  Are there any similarities/differences between rows?

Tip:  Look big, not small.  Look for generalizations in the data that help you to see the bigger picture, then look for smaller details that either support that or show differences.

Now make your own plan using the above questions,

Overall

All countries show a rise/though by differing amounts

In 2015

UK highest, Canada Lowest/some difference in proportions

Predicted

By 2030 trends – all Canada biggest increase, smallest increase UK % Hungary (3%)
