Composition Exercise
Fill in the gaps with the words or expressions in bold used in the model essay above.

The flow chart depicts the life cycle of flowering plants.  There are six stages shown that detail how plants grow from a seed, become fertilized before a new seed is dropped in order that the process may begin anew.

To begin with, bare seeds absorb water from their environment in order to prepare the conditions necessary for germination.  When there is sufficient water and warmth surrounding the seed, it germinates and new roots begin to form.  Over time, the roots take hold and a stem begins to grow out of the soil toward the light above.    Eventually, leaves are produced and flowers finally form, which attract insects for the next stage of pollination.

During pollination, pollen is carried by insects between plants, which allows fertilization to begin.  Fertilization is an important step in which both fruit and seed are produced by the plant.  After seeds are fully formed, they drop and scatter away from the plant, and the process begins again.
