Regarding the question of who should raise children to be stand up citizens, some say that parents are responsible, while others argue that teachers should be accountable.   In my point of view, parents and teachers are both extremely important in raising children to be useful members of society.

Parents play a huge role in the early lives of children and thus are most influential at a young age.

Children learn by copying others, so right from the beginning, parents should model how children behave in the community they live in.   A good community member respects others, has fair and just values, and obeys the rules of a community.  Educating children in these values is every parent’s responsibility, and as such, a child education always begins at home.

However, parents usually work during the day, and once at school teachers play a huge effect on a child’s development.  Whereas children look to their parents as models, they look to their teachers for knowledge and skills.  At school, children learn how to judge others, cooperate together, and the importance of societal values like recycling or racial equality.  Moreover, they study many of the marketable skills they will need when applying for jobs later in life.  Therefore, school is critical for shaping children into upstanding adults when they grow up.

In conclusion, making a model community member can neither happen overnight, nor be simply boiled down to a set teachable skills.  It is a lifetime of learning and personal improvement that makes a good individual.  As such it is the responsibility of every member of society to help its youngest members be the best they can be.

Step 1: Planning
Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society.  Others, however, believe that school is the place to learn this.Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Tip: Consider turning the above question into several planning questions:

a) How children typically learn from parents?  b) What is a good member of society?
c) What else should school teach them?

Type:  Discussion (with Opinion)

  1. What is the topic of the question?
  2. How many questions are there?
  3. How many sides do you need to consider?
  4. Will you answer this question as one-sided or balanced?

The question topic is about whether parents or teachers are responsible for raising responsible citizens.   There is one question with three parts; two for both sides and one for your opinion.  Now you have a choice:

  1. One-sided: Choose a side and mention your opinion in the introduction and relevant paragraph
  2. Balanced:  Choose both sides and give specific opinion in a third paragraph

Plan:  Balanced  Approach

  1. Analyse the question.
  2. Brainstorm a number of main points that you wish to talk about
  3. Choose which points you wish to use and think of two supporting details for each
  4. Decide on the order of your main points before writing since some points are more important than others.

Thesis

both have merits, not solely either parents or school alone

Parents

Parents highly influential at young age

  • Children learn by copying parents, parents should model
  • Community values, fair and just, obeys community rules
  • Educating children in these values, a parent’s responsibility

Teachers

Parents busy during day, teachers hugely important in daytime

  • Teaches provide knowledge and skills
  • At school students learn cooperation, fair judgment, racial equality etc.
  • Marketable skills needed for jobs, school is critical for producing good citizens

Opinion

Cannot simply be taught at home, or be taught as a single set of skills

  • Lifelong improvement needed
  • All community members need to help

This is a balanced essay, in which the writer supports both sides of the question, but under specific conditions.  These conditions are outlined in the introduction; however, a detailed opinion paragraph is combined with the conclusion in this case.

Step 2: Write the essay
