While some people feel that living in rural areas is more rewarding, others believe that an urban living environment is more satisfying.  In my opinion, it is better to live in the city while young, and in the countryside when older.

In the city, life is cheaper and more convenient due to more shops and transportation options.  As young people start out in life, they don’t have much money to buy a car or a house, so the city is a good place to be.  Public transport options make it easy to travel around quickly by bicycle, subway or bus, and a preponderance of shops means cheaper prices through increased competition.  In addition, there are more entertainment options in the city, which is better for socializing.  For example night clubs and bars tend to proliferate more in cities than rural areas making city life more suitable for younger people than older.

On the other hand, healthier living in the countryside makes it more suitable for older people.   As populations get older, more and more retirement homes are being built outside of the city.   In the countryside, the air and water are cleaner, and it is generally quiet which increases people’s sense of well-being.  Furthermore, there is less traffic and crowding in the countryside which removes many obstacles for older person who may have trouble getting around.   Finally, rural areas foster a greater sense of community since people there tend to support each other.  This gives purpose to people’s lives when they know they are cared about by others.

In conclusion, it is my view that the living environment chosen by an individual depends much on their circumstances and age.  A younger person is more likely to appreciate the entertainment and convenience of city life.  In contrast, strong local communities, and closeness to nature may better suit an older person.

Step 1: Planning
It is thought by some that it is better to live in the city, while others believe that life is better in the countryside. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Type:  Discussion (with Opinion)

  1. What is the topic of the question?
  2. How many questions are there?
  3. How many sides do you need to consider?
  4. Will you answer this question as one-sided or balanced?

The question topic is about it is better to live in the countryside or city.   There is one question with three parts; two for both sides and one for your opinion.  Now you have a choice:

  1. One-sided: Choose a side and mention your opinion in the introduction and relevant paragraph

Plan:  Balanced  Approach

  1. Analyse the question.
  2. Brainstorm a number of main points that you wish to talk about
  3. Choose which points you wish to use and think of two supporting details for each
  4. Decide on the order of your main points before writing since some points are more important than others.

POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE DEVELOPMENT QUESTIONS  - Key TIPS

  1. The “or” in the title means that this is an opinion style question. The question doesn’t say that you have to give both
  2. Give your first opinion in the first body paragraph, then the stronger second opinion in the second paragraph.
  3. Repeat the topic in each main point of each body paragraph.

This is a balanced essay, in which the writer supports both sides of the question, but under specific conditions.  These conditions are outlined in the introduction; however, a detailed opinion paragraph is combined with the conclusion in this case.
