TOEFL Introduction for TOEFL Test Takers

James Liu October 12th, 2021

TOEFL is an abbreviation for Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is a standardized test of proficiency in the English language for non-native speakers with an interest in studying in an English-speaking country. It is developed and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and is one of the two major English-language tests in the world.

Why do Universities Accept TOEFL?

The TOEFL® iBT test is a measure of a candidate’s ability to use and understand the English language at the University level. It evaluates how proficiently one is able to combine their listening, reading, speaking and writing skills for the best performance in academic tasks. It's accurate, so its a great way for universities to filter students who may need more help with English.

About the TOEFL Sections

The reading section of the test consists of four to six passages on academic topics. They include the type of material that may be found in undergraduate-level textbooks.

The Listening section has you listen to two student conversations and four academic lectures with each audio followed by questions testing your understanding of what you heard.

The speaking section has 6 parts. 2 indepdent tasks and 4 integrated tasks. The independent tasks will ask you questions on your opinions, while the integrated tasks will ask you questions on lectures and conversations.

The final section consists of the integrted writing task and the independent writing task. It measures your ability to put down ideas in an academic setting.
