TOEIC Vocabulary - sales & promotion

In this article, you will learn about TOEIC vocabulary words related to sales & promotion topic. A good command of English vocabulary is extremely important in scoring well on all sections of the TOEIC. We strongly recommend that you study these vocabulary words to prepare for the TOEIC exam. While studying vocabulary words, you should write the words in a notebook, say the words and sentences many times, and try to create your own setences using the words.

Coupon = a piece of paper that can be used to get something without paying for it, or at a reduced price

  • If you collect ten coupons from the newspaper, you can get a free beach towel. 
  • Bring in this coupon for a free oil change.
  • I'm always clipping coupons from the newspaper to use at the grocery store.
  • Lion Cafe offers a free 12-oz. cup of coffee on National Coffee Day when you present their coupon from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter or ask for it in-store.
  • I had found a Best Buy coupon code from a website, so I entered that code at checkout.

Discount = a reduction in the usual price.

 

discount on + product

  • There is a 25% discount on all electrical goods until the end of the week.
  • There is a 15% discount on all best-sellers until the end of the day.  

Store+ offer someone a (number%) discount

  • The store offers a 2% discount when customers pay in cash.
  • They usually offer you a discount if you buy multiple copies. 

At a discount 

  • The company I work for makes contact lenses, so I can get them at a discount.
  • George said he can help us get the office chair at a discount.
  • We were able to buy our tickets at a discount

  • The discount applies only to children under the age of ten.

  • This part of the law is only applicable to companies employing more than five people.
M: Hi, I saw your store advertised on the Internet, so I dropped by. Your shop is having a clearance sale at the moment. Is that right? Is the sale applicable to home appliances, too?

W: Yes, the products on display are all 30 percent off the retail price.
TOEIC 800

voucher

Voucher = a piece of paper that can be used to pay for particular goods or services or that allows you to pay less than the usual price for them

  • The voucher entitles you to 15% off all overseas flights.
  • These vouchers entitle you to have a free meal.
  • I'm sorry. That item is out of stock, but we'll give you a voucher for 10 percent off any other item in the store.
  • I got a voucher from American Eagle. I decided to use it to buy these cute bracelets and a hoodie.
  • Please pay attention to upper and lower cases when entering the voucher code and click "Redeem voucher." Otherwise, we will not be able to accept the voucher code. We recommend that you copy and paste it to avoid mistakes.

A gift voucher = a voucher given as a present which is exchangeable for goods.

  • I sent Anna a card and a Marks & Spencer gift voucher for Christmas.

Rebate = an amount of money that is returned to you

A tax rebate = a refund on taxes when the tax liability is less than the taxes the individual has paid.

Mail-in Rebate = an offer for a full or partial refund on a product purchase in exchange for providing proof that you bought the item.

Instant rebate = a marketing sgimmick where a product is advertised at a discounted price and the discount is applied at the time of purchase.

  • I may be entitled to a tax rebate this year.
  • There is a $70 rebate offered with the mobile phone.
  • Well, it's three hundred dollars, but we're giving a hundred-dollar mail-in rebate.
  • Often manufacturers will use mail-in rebates as incentives for purchasing. Rebates can be especially appealing to price-sensitive consumers by increasing their willingness to pay.

redeem

To redeem a coupon or a voucher = To exchange the coupon or voucher for the money or products

  • If you have a gift voucher, you can redeem it on the last page of the checkout process.
  • You have 90 days to redeem your winning lottery ticket.
  • Google Offers is a Google mobile application that provides discounts and deals that can be redeemed by users online or at a physical store. There is now a Google Offers iPhone app and a Google Offer android app.
  • If you wish to redeem your coupon in store instead of online, provide the cashier with your coupon code at checkout. Please note that when you redeem a coupon, your card statement may initially show a pending charge for the full transaction amount. When the transaction is finalized, usually 2-3 days later, the charge will reflect the discounted price.

To redeem someone or something = to make something or someone seem less bad

  • The stunning visual effect wasn't enough to redeem a weak plot.
  • A poor game was redeemed in the third quarter by a superb performance from Stephen Curry.
  • He has a chance to redeem himself after last week's mistakes.
  • Draymond Green will look to redeem himself after a poor performance in Game 3

Redeeming feature = A good quality or aspect that makes up for other drawbacks,

  • The only redeeming feature of the job is the salary.
  • The only redeeming feature in the entire buffet was the made-to-order omelet.
  • The house isn't very attractive, but the large backyard is the redeeming feature.
  • I gave them two stars because the only redeeming feature was the very polite and helpful clerk at reception.
