Composition Exercise
Fill in the gaps with the words or expressions in bold used in the model essay above.

The table illustrates the number of fatalities and casualties involving four different kinds of transportation in the UK in two years.

Overall, riding a motorcycle and cycling were the most dangerous transportation types in both years, whereas driving a car was the safest over the period.    Meanwhile, fatalities in all types showed limited improvement though casualties in general fell.

In 2014, motorcycle riders, pedestrians, and cyclists faced the highest fatalities at 117, 39 and 26 respectively, as opposed to car drivers who had the lowest death rate at only 2.  With regard to casualties, those on two wheels were hurt the most with almost 3000 victims reporting injuries, as compared to only 25 car drivers and around 500 pedestrians.

Turning to 2016, motorcycle rider and pedestrian fatalities showed the most significant improvements as both fell to 111 and 35 each.  Loss of life by car drivers remained the same, and cyclist deaths improved slightly. Casualties that year were a different story, increasing slightly for car drivers and significantly for motorcyclists.  Conversely injuries caused to pedal cyclists (1011) and pedestrians (1008) fell overall.

Step 1: Analyzing question

Find the Trends: (3-4 mins)

Look for key points and trends in the data

  1. Look at all the columns.  What is the general difference between fatalities and casualties between the two years?  Which transportation type had the highest fatality and casualty numbers? Which kind had the lowest? Which kinds posted little if any change?
  2. Look at the rows.  Can the transport types be grouped together?  What general trends are there between different transport types?  Can data be grouped together to represent a trend?

Now make your own plan using the above questions,

Overall

Motorcycle/cycling most dangerous

Driving a car safest
fatalities increased/causalities decreased

2014

Fatalities cars lowest, others higher

Casualties people on two wheels (3000), cars (25), pedestrians (500)

2016

Fatalities Motorcycle/pedestrian improved (111/35)

Casualties cars/motorcyclists increased, cyclists/pedestrians fell
