Composition Exercise
Fill in the gaps with the words or expressions in bold used in the model essay above.

The chart compares the percentage of male and female professionals in seven widely different career settings from Advertising to Law in 2007.

Overall, in half the jobs given, both genders were approximately equally represented, though in traditionally gender-dominated professions, stereotypes still persist.

From the outset there were dramatically more men than women in the traditionally male-dominated fields of construction and science with males holding 90 percent and 60 percent of jobs there respectively.   Other fields seemed to break this trend.  Men held exactly the same number of positions as women in Journalism, and both genders were almost equally represented in law and advertising jobs.

Like men, women held more jobs in the stereotypical female jobs of teaching and therapy.  Women dominated the former field accounting for 90% of all positions in teaching, and therapy was similar with women holding 82% of all jobs as opposed to 18% for men.    In roughly half of the occupations given, women held more or less an equal number of jobs to men.

Step 1: Analyzing question

Find the Trends: (3-4 mins)

Look for key points and trends in the data

  1. Look at the columns on your test paper and circle the most interesting results.  Now look for trends between them. It’s important to generalize here as you only have to write between 150 and 200 words.
  2. Most professions have an equal number of men and women.  Of the others, the ones that have more females, tend to be stereotypically female jobs, while the same is true for males.
  3. We can craft (create) an overview to describe these key trends then discuss males in one body paragraph and females in the other.

Now make your own plan using the above questions,

Overall

Genders half jobs approx. equal

Other jobs stereotypically divided

Male jobs (trend)

Construction & Science 90/60
Equal to women journalism / law & advertising

Female jobs
(trend)

Teaching and therapy 90/82
